An excellent gala last weekend, the highlight for me being the double headed S160's to Ipstones. Does anyone know what the large logo 47 was at Cheddleton please?

Yes, I fully agree, a stunning ride and the S160’s were also a highlight for me. Also noteworthy was the quality of the catering and friendliness of the volunteers. The timetable probably needs a tweak in the future though.

Here’s some footage of Pendennis Castle struggling up the bank to Ipstones, a video of the double-headed S160’s will follow on my channel on Sunday. The crew did really well to get Pendennis Castle going again after coming to a stand in the worst possible place.

Gosh, what sort of gradient was that??
Brilliant display of throttle work by driver. Classic bit of "get her rolling and leave it to her to sort herself out"
Loved the graffiti on the brick lineside shed!
Churnet Valley definitely on my to-do list!!
Exxcellent footage.

The ruling gradient between Leekbrook Junction and Ipstones is 1:39. Most of it is graded between 1:40 to 1:45 I believe, so it’s steeper than (say) the NYMR between Grosmont and Goathland.

Yes, the footage doesn’t really do the gradient justice, you need to visit to appreciate it fully.

My footage of the double-headed S160’s up the same gradient is now released.

The video of the Standard 4 will be out next Sunday morning to complete the series :)

I volunteered the Saturday. A great event.

How many tickets do you estimate were sold for the Saturday?

I visited the railway last year from Crewe by train to Stoke-on-Trent, bus from Hanley 'bus station' and walking from a village via the canal: on a weekday, patronage was good, with one trip having diners for lunch. I counted 72 users in one direction. Most were 55 plus as one expects on a working day.

No idea because I wasn't at the station where most people get on and off! Maybe a couple of thousand over the entire weekend.

Just in case anyone is interested; the CVR have a summer Saturday evening Pie and Steam Train ride offer for £12, which is a bargain in my opinion. If it’s the same pies they serve in their restaurant car they are fantastic too and of course the CVR is well worth a visit as they probably have the best spectacle in UK steam preservation with their heavily graded line.

More info here:

That must be the cheapest 'dining' experience of any UK preserved line with a very large gap to the next least expensive.

Visiting last year (only on a regular train), it's a heritage line well worth making the trip for. I went via Stoke-on-Trent's excellent station and then a local bus to the bus 'station', then another bus and a 25 minute walk. Easier than it sounds.

Indeed. I did the breakfast dining train last year and felt that experience was very reasonably priced considering the quality of food and length of journey. I would highly recommend this line and its dining options to anyone.
