Cilla Black, singer and TV star, dies in Spain aged 72

_84632655_black5_pa.jpg

Singer and TV star Cilla Black, who enjoyed a 50-year showbusiness career, has died aged 72, her agent has said.
The 1960s singing star became a popular TV celebrity on such shows as Blind Date and Surprise Surprise.
Spanish police said a woman named Priscilla White - Black's real name - had died in Estepona on the Costa del Sol, where the star had a home.
The death appeared to be due to natural causes, but this had not yet been confirmed by tests, police said.
"It is with deep sorrow that I confirm... the passing of singer and TV personality Cilla Black," said her agent, Nick Fiveash.
"Details of her death will be announced following the coroner's report. Her family have asked for their privacy to be respected at this time."
Prime Minister David Cameron has paid tribute to the entertainer, remembering her as "a huge talent who made a significant contribution to public life".

Tributes have also been paid by her friends from the world of entertainment.
"I am so sad and shocked by news about my good friend Cilla," tweeted Dame Joan Collins. "She was a resplendent and rare talent."
"Such a shock to hear about Cilla's passing," said Sir Paul McCartney. "She was a lovely girl who infected everyone with her great spirit.
"From first meeting her as a cloak room girl at the Cavern in Liverpool, to seeing her many times since, she always had a fun-loving dignity that made her a great pleasure to be around."

Sir Bruce Forsyth said Black would be "sadly missed", while presenter Christopher Biggins described her as a "national treasure".
Broadcaster Noel Edmonds told BBC Radio 5 live she "captured the hearts of the British people" because "she was our Cilla - there were no airs and graces".
Other tributes have come from comedian Jimmy Tarbuck, who said she had "warmth in bundles", and Ringo Starr, who remembered her as "a good friend".
Des O'Connor called her "a very special lady", while broadcaster Gloria Hunniford - who saw Black two weeks ago at a friend's barbeque - called her "a true icon".

Very sad to hear of this. Won't be the same without her.

RIP Cilla.

Plenty of people on Digital Spy who had encountered her in their line of work or just meeting her at events have nothing nice to say either, in fact I'm wondering if there have been any positive comments.

But the Diana Effect will come into play here, as you'd expect.

She visited my school and, as a scouser, I didn't find her very nice. She was quite rude. Probably not the time or the place to discuss it though.

She was very good until she started singing.
Why on earth did she choose songs out of her voice range

Count me out please of the above sentiments. Icon of what?

She was the best selling female music artist ever at the time she was singing. So she was an icon at least in the 60s if all those people listened to her music. My Mum says she saw Cilla on stage and said she was great.

I think that we need to separate the performer from the person. I never met her, so I have nothing to say about her as a human being, but I can recognise what she achieved in her career even though she was not one of my favourite singers or TV personalities.

Immediately after someone's passing is not the time to discuss their failings, mistakes or personality faults, if there are any. I'm sure there'll be plenty of time for that later on, when some of those who knew her start dishing the dirt.

Indeed. And I wonder how long until people stop being nice (and respectful) and then start to reveal the reality...

I hardly think you can compare her passing to that of Diana even though it does seem rare nowadays for a 72 year old to suddenly die of natural causes.

I really haven't got any strong feelings about Cilla, I was never a great fan although credit to her for making the most of what talent she had.

RIP

My point was about someone that many people switched from saying nothing but bad things to nothing but good, sycophantic, things after the death (Diana had been slated by nearly all sections of the media until her death)

I'm not comparing the cause of death.

I have to admit it was quite a shock when I saw on the news that Cilla had died. I have fond memories of watching 'Blind Date' when I was younger and I do think that she and her talent will be missed. She was certainly one of the few TV presenters that I actually liked. It is a great shame that she has died and I don't think her talent will ever be matched by anybody else

RIP

Well I was around at the time and from what I can recall most of the bad press was after she'd died.

You don't remember the high profile affair, divorce and huge disapproval of the Royal Family, all reported when they happened?

All I've seen from the media has been adoration. Particularly from a certain competitor of the Daily Mail.

Isn't it a shame that a thread dedicated to Cilla Black's death has become a place for not only her to be rubbished but others as well.

It's a fact of life that genuine opinions, (and frequently verifiable events), are often suppressed by those with money and power to threaten. The subject's death usually releases those who may have things to say from the threats.

Are you serious?

Of course, the clue is the lack of emoticon.

Who has been rubbishing Diana? I was stating the facts of the matter on how things were reported and when.

Unless you're disputing some of those things I mentioned happened? Because that would prove my point on how venerated she's been since her death, frankly.

Which part of Diana, do you think, has been venerated since her death, the person or the personality?

I just want to say that I have absolutely no problem with Diana, so I'm not trying to jab here.

I'm not sure quite what you mean by the question.

Get a grip people! this is supposed to be a thread dedicated to Cilla Black it has nothing to do with Princess Diana or anybody else in that regard and if people dont have anything nice to say about her then dont say anything at all thats all i will say. I remember Cilla from watching Blind Date and surprise surprise and it was at that time on a Saturday night when the whole family would watch thats when it was a proper family Saturday night in. The stuff on at the weekends now is just terrible compared to then.

It was poorly worded, my apologies. I was just referencing Greenback's earlier quote about separating Cilla's fame from the person, and I think we need to do the same with Diana.

Oh, definitely - I agree. I guess my point was about the nature of the fame before and after her death.

I think, though, that this probably isn't the thread!
