The loco in action today. Seems a bit weird having a virtually silent loco!

Great that it still has a whistle!
Indeed, I thought that a nice touch too.

More photographs here, including a sneak peak under the bonnet for anyone who is interested:

is the 08-E designed as a straight swap for a 08 or does the battery pack allow more power so could be used in place of some mainline engines for switching?

It’s 1.5 times as powerful as an 08. Endurance is the greater concern. Also 15mph max still.

Has someone gone on Temu, Alibarba or ebay and bought a fake Clayton Class 18?

15mph, max speed in yards and sidings is 5mph anyhow so max speed is not an issue.

A bit baffled by the flashing red light on the side of the cab. It could be mistaken for a not to be moved lamp or stop!

I read that they have kept as much of the original cab fittings and controls as possible, to aid staff familiarity. (And possibly to preserve grandfather rights?)
That's the simplest possible explanation.

Thank you.

It appears that this locomotive has been travelling around the country. It spent a fortnight at Whatley Quarry, Somerset running alongside existing shunters and in the past week or so it has turned up at Neville Hill railway depot, West Yorkshire. I don’t know if the shunter is still there.

Arrived last Wednesday for a week long trial, so it's now left.

08296 is to be converted by Positive Traction into an 08e for Heidelberg Materials UK (formerly Hanson UK).

Would love it if we (Eurostar) converted our slightly clapped-out old 08 into one of these...!
