Class 101 vs Sprinters

I watched an older DVD that had a cab ride for a class 101 in Wales.
Mention was made that in the '80s Sprinters were tried on the line (Cowry Valley) but were withdrawn due to "excessive noise on the curves."

Can someone give a technical explanation for this statement?

I believe that would be flange squeal, this is the screeching noise produced at the flange/ rail interface, though i am open to correction. I thought it was easily dealt with however, an aluminium cover on the flange or something?

Perhaps engine noise? Because of the hydrostatic transmission, Sprinters need to rev right up when the train is setting off, a 101 has a mechanical transmission, so doesn't need to.

just read the 'on the curves' bit, in which case I don't know. Perhaps something to do with the Sprinters' longer coach length?

That is exactly the problem and the solution used
There was a similar issue with Class 37/4s and 156s on the WHL
Some 156s and all the 37/4s had lubricating kits fitted
Eventually the 156s had the wheels replaced and the lubricating kits removed

Thanks, i knew it rang a bell, what was the lubricant used originally, grease?

But what would make them more noisy on corners then a 101?
Different wheel profiles
The same sort of issues apply even with rolling stock delivered new now!

The latest EMUs have been delivered with incorrect flange widths for use on UK track

I was asking specifically about I knew that wheels can screech going round a sharp curve.
I think the flange width suggestion might answer it.
