Something to do with a known axle issue on 175010 apparently
So assuming it wasn't intended to deliver it to GWR with a known axle fault, but had to be fixed at some stage so it could subsequently go to GWR. Wonder if it had been moved ahead of being fixed.

Is it a case of the unit been moved around at Ely, to an area with more space, where it could be lifted to replace faulty axle, but someone just took it because the place with more space was nearest to depot entrance. Could be another reason, but do have to wonder how a faulty unit got chosen.

Does rather ask questions of who checked they had correct unit etc

This will be an issue with depot/sidings operations or communications; no “not to be moved” board, wrong prep sheet, wrong unit number provided to driver, stock marked up incorrectly on relevant system etc.

I sat in the car at South Wigton for an hour to get a photo of it, waiting for it to leave Leicester only for it to go onto the depot:(

If 175010 has some kind of axle fault, it is unlikely that it could be rectified at Ely, it would more likely have to go to a depot with lifting facillities. How does Leicester sound ???

Sounds very much like a ROG problem… seeing as they also do all the shunting at Papworth now!

I beleive the current locations of all of the 175 is as follows

Laria :- 002/009/114
Leicester: - 010
Ely:- 001/003-008/011 101-113/115/116

But also think 004//005/006/008/101/115 are not in their orginal formations.

In addition I'm unclear what condidtion 008 is in after its fire damage in 2023.

Comments and corrections welcome.

Reads to me as though this movement is taking the "wrong unit" back to Ely. Whether the ROG loco and barriers then lifts the "right unit" out of Ely will probably come later !!!
There a path linked in post 773 for Ely to laira in addition to the path from Leicester to ely

Is it because the 175s are swingers so an extra unit would require extra brake force elsewhere ie extra barrier coaches or similar?
