Having seen what happened to one guy when I was coming home from Newcastle one Saturday evening... you really don't want to think too much about it!

Is drunks on trains that much of a problem in the North? (There seems to be more attention paid to their behaviour in the North as opposed to London area, FCC excepted.)

Not especially, its just the Leeds - Dewsbury - Huddersfield - Stalybridge - Manchester corridor that does it. And surrounding areas.

Same issue on the 2hr 30min London Midland journey from Euston to New Street this morning. The 350/1 Desiro had clearly been run all weekend without the tanks being emptied. How is this acceptable?
