They were there from the 185s' introduction in 2006 (I managed to get one for my swivel chair at home ). they said "welcome to the brand new pennine class 185 etc" I guess it was purely to highlight that they were new trains at the time, pointless having them after that.

As stated already, they were a sort of promo thing to help introduce the units.

With the amount that got pinched on a daily basis I would imagine that cost might have something to do with their withdrawal!

They did have other ones that just said something like

TransPennine Express
Pennine Class 185
Standard Class

pointless having them after that.
The 158s on TPE had them until withdrawl by TPE.

So it's likely TPE couldn't be bothered with them because people like you removed them.

If you look on the top of the seats of 185s you can see where the "fluff" has been pulled off by the removal of these headrests, that may have been another reason.

They were removed for a number of reasons:

a) They cost a fortune
b) They kept coming off and getting stuck to people's backs.
c) They kept coming off and making the interior of the train a complete mess.
d) It was difficult to distinguish First Class
e) They were damaging the seat fabric

I'm sure they may be more, but that in essence is what we were told.

How old are the 185s. When will they get a refresh/refurb?

I do like them but just think that as an 'intercity' train their doors should be shut away in a vestibule. Could this type of mod ever be made?

I think the first ones arrived in 2006 (?) so they aren't due a refurb for a while!

I believe that the paper from which they were made was not easily recyclable, so that was the main reason for their withdrawal. That nugget of information was given to me by TPE's Customer Services Director!

2006 sounds about right, but whilst they might not be due for a refurb for a while yet (say about another 4-5 years maybe) they could probably do with reupholstering soon as some of the seats in standard class are starting to a look a little worn.

With many off-peak trains being so busy on TPE the seats on the 185s are a lot more intensively used than on most units in use today.

Flies in the face of their ISO 14001 certification somewhat
