I have found some videos on youtube documenting the use of Class 222s on Liverpool to Nottingham trains on race days. Does anyone know when this will be happening this year if it is a yearly thing?

Grand National day is the most likely.

The Grand National at Aintree is Saturday 8th April 2017, they also race on the 2 preceeding days.

Nothing yet on EMT website (that I can find) about any specific train reinforcment.

Hopefully I've not missed it posted elsewhere, but is there any more news on whether 222's will be allocated for the Grand National this Saturday?

It doesn't look like any services are being shown as being split at Nottingham which is what they normally do if they put a 222 on.

Which type of 222 is it likely to be? A 4-car wouldn't give any more capacity than 2x158s, Surely not a 7-car, is it more likely to be a 5-car 222?

It has been a 7 car for the last few years.

I got suddenly reminded of that when a few well dressed people drinking prosecco out of plastic flutes boarded heading Liverpoolwards at Sankey this Morning!

They may well not want to draw attention to it to avoid bashers crowding it out.

If that was really true it would be a somewhat forlorn hope in the internet age! In any case given the lack of Northern services this year I think bashers are the least of their worries. In any case sensible bashers would ride the "middle" trips in between those provided for racegoers.

Understand from a Gen Group there will be a Meridian but can't say which services as the poster seems to have his train numbers mixed up

Indeed. It also wouldn't be acceptable for EMT to not tell through passengers they have to change at Nottingham until they actually turn up to travel. Someone asking on Twitter doesn't have to mean they are a basher, it could be they are a race goer and want to check to see if one service is going to be a long train.

The 222 will run an additional at 2118 from Liverpool, calling South Parkway (2128), Widnes (2137), Warrington (2146), Oxford Road (2206), Piccadilly (2209), Stockport (2219) and Nottingham (2343). Also the 1952 scheduled service will run as a 158 6 car formation. The 2052 and 2137 may run as 4 car instead of 2 car also.

Inward working of 222 as ECS:-

Must have been arranged at very short notice as 2118 not yet in systems

Not showing in RTT but they are showing additional 20:35, 21:15 and 21:50 TPE Liverpool to Manchester Victoria express workings.

Also the 1952 is altered to run direct from Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester Oxford Road with no intermediate stops, presumably because doing local door would be too difficult on a very busy service.

Any self respecting basher would not be seen dead on a 222! ;)

Define basher! Given the scarcity of what might be considered to be interesting traction an alternative source of interest is riding traction over unusual routes. As such a Meridian to Liverpool via the Hope Valley definitely qualifies as interesting. Of course if you don't "do" units then you either stay at home or spend your hobby time on heritage lines, at least in large parts of the country.

Here is the 222 at Liverpool and Manchester.
(Not the best quality unfortunately)

Here are a couple of ever so slightly clearer photos. One from Stockport and one from Liverpool Lime Street.
