I am trying to workout what the old numbers of the 317s were

I have found this site that says some units had more than one 3173xx number (i.e. 317 722 - 317 322 - 317392) I cannot find any other evidence of the second 317 3xx number. Does anyone know if this information is correct?

Thanks

Yes, 317322-317328 were renumbered 317392-317398 for a short period around 1994 when their first class was declassified.

Ah thanks, do you know if they reverted back to the original number before getting the current numbers?

I don't think 317392 or 317393 reverted to their original numbers. They ran on the LTS route in the late 1990s still numbered 317392/393. In 2000, they were converted to 317/7. Not sure if they went for conversion directly after working on LTS.

It looks like they did. The 2001 Combined Volume lists them as follows:

317 708 ex- 317 308
317 709 ex- 317 309
317 710 ex- 317 310
317 714 ex- 317 314
317 719 ex- 317 319
317 722 ex- 317 392
317 723 ex- 317 393

317 729 ex- 317 329
317 732 ex- 317 332

This is interesting, as I have records of travelling on both these units on GN under their original numbers during the mid 90s, which would have been before they went over to LTS. I wonder if something odd went on with the numbering, like the number reverted on the unit but not in terms of paperwork, which then got picked up when the units went over to LTS. I can't think of any obvious reason for these two units to have been missed out for work on WAGN. The 317s certainly managed a quite complex history in the end!
