Water Trak was initially trialed on three 319's and two 170's. The full fleet fit of sixteen is on the 170's for a full fleet service trial. Both the initial and full fleet trial are being funded by the PIF (Performance Innovation Fund).

I shan't be sad to see the back of them. They were okay for a few years in the '10s, but have had their day on the Northern network now. Mind you, at least they guarantee a 4-car train (when they work!)

The 331s would probably be even better on that section since they'd get to speed much quicker than the 319s.
I'm very happy with the 331s.

I have noticed when at Wigan when there's been a 331 on the Blackpool North service, you can tell the drivers are eager for them to do 100mph before Euxton Balshaw Lane. On the 319s I've noticed going to Euxton they only get to about 75/80mph on some services then let the train coast before slowing down rather than going faster.

I think it's uphill from Wigan towards Euxton so a 319 will not get to 100 mph. They sometimes do in the opposite direction.

That's correct. It'll return to Stockport CMD tonight, but for how long is anyone's guess.

According to the diagrams released under a FOI request earlier in the year, 2K33 (1906 Piccadilly to Crewe) and 5H33 (2016 Crewe - Stockport CS) are both normally part of diagram AN805, which is a 331 diagram.

At the time of writing, they are the normal stock for most Liverpool - Wigan NW & Blackpool services except on Sundays. For how long is uncertain - maybe the December timetable change ???

They also run six round trips from Wigan North Western to Manchester Victoria, mostly stopping at Eccles. Three in the morning peak and three in the afternoon. I don't know what purpose they serve. The 16:13 from Victoria had a handful of passengers on board. I expect the 17:13 would be somewhat busier.

Probably change when the wires are up on the westhoughton line and if/when the wires go live on the stalybridge line but using either of the 323s or 331s.

Those trains via Eccles to Wigan are cancelled virtually every day. I would say they are some of the worst performing trains ran on the west side. I can't see them surviving the next time table change but who knows. It's mostly down to lack of train crew.

I had assumed they were running in advance of what ever station is supposed to be serving the environs of Leigh so that they could build a station and not that have to spend years finding stock or paths as they already run.

On a traction related note the service has seem DMUs and more 331s recently after being purely 319s for a long time

Wigan commuters who value a shorter journey time by not stopping at every station between Wigan and Manchester. The 0739 is well loaded when it runs.
Plus the 0836 has been useful for picking up cancelled stops if the 0802 Liverpool Lime St to Manchester Airport is too overcrowded to serve Eccles and Patricroft.
