The thinking behind that was that passengers boarding at Watford travelling towards St Albans had either come through the barriers at Watford, or Euston, Hemel, Bushey etc and therefore already had tickets, Very few travelled from say How Wood to Park Street.
Coming the other way of course there were no ticket offices at St Albans or any of the stations, so it was a "pay train" and commission-wise it was more lucrative to sell tickets from St Albans/Park Street/How Wood etc to London than it was to get a child single from Watford North to Garston!

This makes perfect sense. The same logic seems to apply on the Marlow donkey

It was headed southbound. I presume they don't plunge out as I've never heard of that kind of thing so it isn't that.

Ah okay yes, the crossing is only plunged going towards St Albans, it's a treadle on the track coming towards Watford.

Arrange my evening bike ride to cross Watford North crossing at same time as 2F40. So far as I could see there wasn't a single soul on it!
Yep Covid has even impacted the drug trading at Bricket Wood and Park Street, serviced by sales agents from Watford North and Garston. Sad times
