Yesterday when walking back from when I had to go to school for something, A Pair of Waterloo bound 458s shot through Teddington (Yes I know they were diverted one way), and the driver made a very very odd two tone on the horn :?:.

Does anyone have any clues?

if you mean the actual noise of it then it could be to do with the air horn pipes being blocked with something. There are 2 super bubbles that I know of that have 158 horns, that keep being reported as defects. They are 153301 and 153313. Recently I was on 156403 and it had a two-tone buzzer

158838's high tone filled with water yesterday during a downpour on the way back from chester, sounded like "uuuuuuuurrrrrgggggggghhhh.....blubblllleeaaalllaa" Most amusing!

Horns can get filled with all manner of stuff (pigeons being a particularly comical one) or be set up differently, all of which will affect how they sound. I've found that no two units ever sound exactly the same.

Yes mate, I've had the pigeon one before. Ice/snow also is bad, a 158 I was driving ended up sounding like a poxy mini's horn last year due to slush in it . It did still work if you used it often though so I avoided having to reduce speed & crawl around the network. 175's on the other hand are that noisy it rattles your fillings, the horns are located above the windscreen rather than below the solebar. Alstom were supposed to have modified them as we had test's done & the decibel level was well over acceptable in the cab, that was 2 years ago & since only 175005 has been modified.

some 66s now sound like loud tractor horns, and I've even heard one which sounded like something southern region (like 73s or slammers)

Horns can be affected by the quality of the air drawn in by the compressor. Air that is moist before compresson will produce a small puddle of water after compression.

I believe the new 66s have had to be modified because the original 66s were so loud?

We get the same effect on the "Skoda's" horn grilles, though they aren't really able to withstand the punishment and are being replaced with a different style of grille.

probably why a lot of skoda horns are more squeaky than they should be.
I've noticed a lot of horns on all sorts of trains sound like 170s. 442s sound a bit like 158s.
170/171 style: 168, 465, 466, 357, 375, 376, 377

Also, just out of interest, what is the purpose of the 750vDC electrostars having whistles too? Are they for possible running on LU metals on the ELL?

Dunno.Dont get on the class a lot.No work in my link so I tend to get jobs off of spare turns.

I know my leg has caught the horn handle a few time causing the horn to blow.Made two old women at Reading jump.It was quite funny but I was quite embarrassed.
