I’d be surprised if it started from Stafford as I covered a few of those services back then. Used to love the run through Kensington Olympia.

The loco and stock parked in the siding just south of Stafford most of the afternoon id jump on at new street and get off at marston green and it always called at lea hall also its the only xc service I've ever known to stop at marston green and lea hall thats why I'm so interested to find information on this unusual services

Found this, it has a comprehensive view of the timetable patterns dating back in that era, that service sounds like an XC one. http://www.1s76.com/1S76 1986.htm
Hi Steve been through the lot had no joy but thanks

1V87 1609 Stafford Paddington ran May 87 - May 88 was the one that made those stops, 165X from New Street.

Was stock off 1K01 1401 ManPic Stafford, off 1M10 0703 Padd Manchester Think it might have been Monday - Thursday. Friday started at Wolves 1632. Booked 47 but quite often 50.

Anyway Google above for more info and photos on Flickr

Great find.

I don't suppose you have a list of stops and times for 1V87?

The published timetables have this train running for two years from May 87 to May 89. Only shown as 16.32 from Wolverhampton, no indication it started from Stafford, so that must have been a late alteration.

Here's a poor-quality snap of the relevant pages.

Weekdays 1M10 0703 Paddington - Wolverhampton and 1V87 1632 Wolverhampton - Paddington ran in the summer of 1987. With the switch to the winter timetable in October 1987 it was amended to 1M10 0703 Paddington - Manchester Piccadilly, 1K01 1401 Manchester Piccadilly - Stafford, 1V87 1609 Stafford - Paddington (Monday-Saturday). It was formed of the seated coaches & micro buffet off the Up Penzance beds and hence the short formation. All trains were booked to be class 47 throughout. On 1987 Summer Saturdays 1M10 went to Llandudno, but with a normal set of stock. Class 31 & 50 regularly appeared vice 47 when 1M10 terminated at Wolverhampton, but were somewhat rarer when 1M10 ran through to Manchester.

The published timetable for October 1987 still has 1632 Wolverhampton - Paddington, not coming from Stafford. The 0703 runs as you describe but the 1401 from Manchester is shown as a Birmingham, calling at the main stops.

This label adds to the mystery as it shows Didcot and Slough, which are not in the timetables I provided earlier.

I think that the supplement for the October 1987 timetable will say something different (as was often the case). 1V87 was definitely 1609 from Stafford by 15/10/87 because I travelled on it with 47258 dragging 47558 which had failed at Didcot. At Stafford 1K01 connected in to 1O08 1410 Liverpool - Poole that preceded 1V87.
