Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone has any information on Class 58 depot allocations, when in service with BR?

General information would be very help, but specifically I'm looking for the allocations of 58006; 58028; 58036; & 58045.

Thanks!

Indeed, I was aware they were all originally allocated to Toton Depot, thank you.

However what I am hoping to figure out at this point, is whether they all remained allocated to Toton for their UK based working life - or if they were allocated elsewhere at all?

As far as I know the 58's were always allocated to Toton TMD apart from when driver training on the class was required then they were allocated to which ever depot required one, at Saltley we had 58024. Incidentally we used class 58's on the Longbridge to Swindon car part trains just before privatization.
When Saltley (An RfD depot, the last sector of BR)was taken over by EWS we had 58006 as a "Route Leaner" loco for several weeks between Saltley ,Toton the Erewash, Doncaster and York,we also had 56007 on the same roster !
And on several occasions we were called on to rescue "Virgin Cross Country" express trains due to failures with their class 47/8's.
I also personally drove 58004 on a Sunday teatime train to Paddington (Manchester to Paddington) alas 58004 failed at Birmingham International and a replacement loco was sent for when it arrived it was 58014,and to save time both locos went forward in multiple all the way to Paddington !

Brilliant, very helpful thank you Saltleyman. Certainly sounds like they got around, despite being generally based at Toton TMD.

Out of curiosity and a bit off topic Saltleyman (and if you're still reading this) what ability would a class 58 have to keep up with class 47 timings? I think they had a top speed of 80mph? But would they have accelerated quickly given the extra power that they had? I'm not sure how they were geared and I've never travelled behind one, I've always wondered about 56s too as they seem to be quite quick off the mark sometimes.

58's were powerful locos but with low gearing for freight work but once they got going they could really fly especially on passenger stock as there was very little weight involved compared to a 1800 tonne coal train.Funnily enough their main problem was that they "slipped" a lot at low speeds. On the Swindon car part trains we usually had two 47's in multiple and with a trailing load of 800 tonnes at the approach to Sapperton Tunnel you would usually be down to 20 mph but with a single 58 you could maintain at least 25 mph.

There were very few drivers outside the LM region that signed class 58 traction, only Didcot men on the Western region and Barrow Hill drivers on the Eastern region. On the LM only Saltley, Toton,Coalville,Burton,Leicester and Bescot men as far as I recall were trained on the class.

They were also used on WCML "drags" between Birmingham & Nuneaton, etc., and on railtours - and they could reach well over 80 mph (there were no data recorders, radar traps, etc. at that time..). If allowed, they could have easily out-paced any 47, and probably almost matched a 55.

EWS decided to start "storing" and withdrawing class 58 locos in 2001 and a lot were put into store at various locations(mainly Toton) as afr as I know they were never allocated to Eastleigh and were all gone by 2002.

Didn't the Mainline ones get allocated to Hither Green - or was it just a Toton "outbase" on paper?
Had one flying up the WCML on a hours late tour the once, plenty power but ultimately far too dull to be of real interest. Very much a poor mans grid.

it says 20 were reallocated to eastleigh on 2001 as ews wanted to concentrate all there operations in the southeast and the west midlands although all heavy maintanance was still done at toton

there was several stored at old oak common for a few years also

It was strange to start seeing them down here around then. They were pretty rare beasts in the Exeter until the early 2000s
