Is it not the case that the 1st station at Hawick was on a terminal stub from the line which was then continued onwards on a different alignment and that 1st station became the goods station at Hawick?

Yes, that's right. When the railway was extended southward from Hawick, the new station was built on the curve which ran to the bridge over the River Teviot. The Wikipedia template could, perhaps, show the spur to the goods/original station.

Another suggested addition to the Wikipedia template for that route is the military station at Stobs, a quarter of a mile or so north of the main station. That was also on a spur but had quite extensive sidings including an exchange platform with a narrow gauge railway serving Stobs Camp. The military station and sidings seem to have lasted from about 1904 to the 1960s, although I don't know whether the railway installations were active until the end.
