Collecting pre booked tickets from a ticket machine

Today i went to collect a paper ticket from a ticket machine and all i had to do was enter the booking reference. Previously i had to insert a bank card and type in a PIN or tap a bank card on the machine as well as entring the collection code reference.
Has the ticket collection policy changed. Whats the rationale for no longer needing a bank card to collect train tickets

You still have to if you book through a TOC website.

They've just removed the arbitrary need to present any bank card when collecting tickets bought through a 3rd party seller, which doesn't need the payment card.

It looks like you don't need a card for TOC bookings, but once you type the reference in it asks for the card

Been going on since last year, but is specific to certain TVM machine types and retailers.

There are a few threads discussing it, such as these two:

Simply not true at all.

It is and always has been up to the retailer whether they ask for same card collection. That includes TOCs.

For example, GTR and Southeastern both allow collection with any card (or no card, now).

shouldn't this be standardised. Its a bit strange that some train companies will require a bank card but some do not

Should all companies take the same approach to dealing with fraud? After all, it could be your money that a fraudster is trying to spend.

Yes, the funamental purchase user experience should be the same between TOCs so as to avoid misunderstandings. So many people use virtual cards now that asking for a card is a problem, and the railway (some of it) is about the only business that still does.

How? A lot of users use virtual cards now, and in any case, fraud does happen, users need to be careful with their physical cards and online data.

In reality the existence of things like 3D Secure and equivalents render proving you have the physical card largely unnecessary because you need to know something that isn't on the card and can't be skimmed from it to make an online purchase. Having to present the card dates from before these security features were available.
