I’m hoping to start a career on the railways and the Conductor/Train Manager role really appeals to me. Should I be overly concerned having read in the media about driver only trains and the potential for the Conductor role to be abolished?

depends where and who you are applying for. Northern will not be fully DOO for many many years and plenty of other TOC's are in dispute. The future is very cloudy at the moment no one really knows what will happen.

The role will inevitably evolve and change over the next decade or so on virtually all franchises, however, just get into the railways wherever you can at any grade. If that is as a guard and things change redundancies would be very unlikely, just a change of job title and responsibilities.

Thanks Spankthemonkey, encouraging words. Life is too short, it’s time for me to go for it!
