Hi all

Loolking for some advice on the ticket options.

Travelling from Peterborough to Preston on a Saturday in July. probably 19th July.

Getting very confused by the ticketing options on the Nationalrail website - seems to be implying 78 for a single ticket - a mistake I hope !

Anyone got any ideas what the best combinations of tickets are for a same-day return journey ? Seems to be a number of different routes available.

Looking to travel around 9am, returning around 6pm

Thanks !

That's the correct price for a through ticket, yes. There are some advances via Manchester available for around £55 on that day.

If you don't mind travelling via Leicester, you can split at Oakham to get the journey for £68.80 on walk up tickets (buy a Peterborough to Oakham return and an Oakham to Preston return).

If you don't mind going via Leeds, you can do the whole thing for £30 on advances by getting the 0755 out and the 1725 back.

Do you hold any railcards?

That's pretty good. Also available on the 17.47 return (via Manchester and Leeds). And as an added bonus, the Leeds to Preston train may well be a Pacer!

In Russia, Pacer bashes you! (And most other places too actually)
Did watch a 158 depart Preston heading towards Leeds yesterday though, they're not bad.

If the OP ends up booking Advances fairly close to the date of travel then, if the Advances via Leeds have become more expensive, it may be worth checking a combination of Peterborough-Leicester and Leicester-Preston advances. For example, for tomorrow Preston-Leicester on the 1817 (change at Birmingham) would be £17, and Leicester-Peterborough (staying on the same Birmingham-Cambridge train) would be £7.20.

And if this doesn't work, it may worth checking fares from Peterborough to Manchester via BHM. National Rail Enquiries is showing both the 0752 outwards tomorrow and the 1827 return from MAN as £20.20 each. Then there's 3 trains per hour at £8 adv or £11 walkup between MAN and PRE.

I am not surprised the OP is confused given just how many possible routes are available here, these may not be permitted routes on walk up tickets, but for splitting advances... here's just a short selection according to TrainsCanBeCheaper.

Peterborough - Leeds - Preston
Peterborough - Leeds - Manchester - Preston
Peterborough - Grantham - Leeds - Preston
Peterborough - Manchester Picc - Preston (could always additionally change at Sheffield)
Peterborough - Doncaster - (Sheffield) - Manchester - Preston
Peterborough - Birmingham - Preston
Peterborough - Leicester - Sheffield - Preston
Peterborough - Nuneaton - Preston
Peterborough - Nottingham - Derby - Crewe - Preston

Strangely can also go...
Peterborough - York - then onwards either via Leeds, direct from York or Manchester Picc to Preston! Seemingly valid on a walk-up ticket too! Going Peterborough - York - Manchester Picc - Preston appears to be the fastest route too.

And that's not even covering Advances via London! Eg
Peterborough - Kings Cross - Euston - Preston
Peterborough - Finsbury Park - Euston - Preston
Peterborough - Kings Cross - Leeds - Manchester Airport - Preston
Peterborough - Ely - Kings Cross - Euston - Preston

These (except the last one) are more expensive by about £10-15 each way (before any splitting) but at 3h46m can work out half an hour quicker. And I'm 99% certain via London wouldn't be a permitted route on walkup tickets!
