Tomorrow I need to travel from Brighton to Moorgate (leaving at 7am and returning at 10pm). Thameslink quotes £59.00

If I put this into the train split sites... it is advising...

Brighton to Gatwick Day Return £14.50
Gatwick to London Underground Zone 1 Anytime Return £30.50 with condition: not valid on london underground

Given the second ticket is not valid on the underground is it just expecting I'd then pay for the underground separately even though it shows a change to moorgate?
It's impossible to buy a ticket to "London Underground Zone 1" if you try that directly hence why that second ticket is confusing me.

Thanks

It’s expecting you to take the Elizabeth Line from Farringdon, which is not part of the Underground.

Slightly confused by the first part of the proposed ticket split. Have the Brighton->Gatwick Airport Anytime Day Return fare (route "Thameslink only") as £14.50 rather than £14.00.

The Elizabeth Line doesn't serve Moorgate as such.

I think this is intended to be valid; the "Not Underground" route code is attached to a load of journeys to signify they're meant to use the Thameslink core.

In fairness, the planner does explicitly say "Take the tube from Farringdon to Moorgate". Would this not be covered in any case by the Kings Cross to Moorgate joint availability?

Interestingly if I put Gatwick to Moorgate into the national rail journey planner it quotes £32.90 and says a thameslink travelcard

Apologies - i've fixed that bit to show £14.50

That seems to be an Anytime Day Travelcard Z1-6 from Gatwick Airport (route "Thameslink only").

No, that only applies to tickets for travel into Kings Cross or Moorgate from the north.

This is a ticket that can come about with the way the "London Underground Zone 1" fares are constructed. Fares to these destinations give you a single trip in the stated underground zones, so this journey is expecting you to use the tube.

The issue here comes about because these fares don't (usually) exist in the same way as other fares - they're constructed by adding an amount to the normal "base" fare to London Thameslink. When doing the construction all that changes is the fare amount and destination, the route isn't changed, so when we add the add-on to a base fare that's routed "Not Via London" you get this ticket that looks dodgy.

It's valid according to the rules, and should operate the TfL barriers no issue, but certain members of staff may take issue with it (unfortunately made worse as staff are very poorly trained with how to handle tickets they think were issued incorrectly). If its the same price to buy a London Thameslink ticket and use contactless it might be an easier option, though if not this is unlikely to cause you issues

This is a Gatwick to London Thameslink ticket (routed not via LU) with an add-on (priced at a premium compared to the cost of PAYG), extending the validity to an LU station within Zone 1.

This is no different to a York to London ticket which is routed "LNER Only" being extended to Zone 1 by LU.

Not Underground, LNER only etc are merely route codes which affect the National Rail part of the journey; they do not in any way prevent a ticket with the appropriate LU extension fare being used on LU.
