Could the two Wigan stations be merged?

Was travelling on a spontaneous trip from Ulverston to Manchester Airport yesterday, and after we noticed the TPE train we were meant to catch was 39L, we thought we'd try and change at North Western or Warrington Bank Quay instead. The (very friendly) train manager on our VT service suggested that we change to Wallgate and get the service to Victoria, which we did.

What was surprising though (largely due to the Bolton works admittedly) was the fact our service went directly onto the WCML from Wallgate, and routed via Chat Moss. With the two stations being in such close proximity, is it worth just building a walkway to Wallgate and making it part of North Western?

There is a walkway. It's called crossing the road! Any other walkway would be less direct and probably require more vertical circulation.

It's certainly made easier by there being no barriers at North Western, but why can't they just be one station? It's an interesting situation for sure.

Wallgate's platforms are downstairs from street level and North Western's are up, probably far too much logistically for the sake of a walk across the road.
