Full priced adult off peak for Thursday.

(best defined by price!)
Am I best to do Coventry London Farnham

Coventry, Reading, faff about on the north downs line and in Aldershot, Ash Vale, Farnham

Or is there an alternative? Or some splits too help! Can't be tied to one train but am happy to be off peak only.

Thanks.

Is this a request for undiscounted Coventry - Farnham Off Peak Return (SVR) ticket prices? If so:-

Coventry [COV] - Farnham [FNH]
Off Peak Return (SVR) Route: Not London £50.50 (Not valid before 0930)
Off Peak Return (SVR) Route: +London £53.00 (Restrictions apply between Coventry & London. Any train between London & Farnham)

(In this case route +London is valid for permitted routes that do not go via London, as it is a higher price fare)

If you wish to go out one way and return the other, you can buy the cheaper ticket and get a change of route excess for the more expensive route.

Can you define "best"?

Presumably you've looked at a journey planner and aware of the timetable, but want to know the best in terms of easier interchanges? Or are you after scenery or something?
Or is there an alternative?
Are you asking for permitted routes? If so:-

Valid Routes from Coventry [COV] to Farnham [FNH]:

  1. Direct trains from Coventry to Farnham
  2. Shortest Route - This appears to be via Oxford, Reading and Wokingham
  3. Mapped Routes (Ash Vale, Guildford & Farnborough all pass fares check rule):
Coventry - LONDON GROUP: LONDON GROUP - Ash Vale:
    Coventry - Ash Vale:
    Coventry - LONDON GROUP:
    LONDON GROUP - FARNBOROUGH GROUP:
    Coventry - FARNBOROUGH GROUP:
    Coventry - LONDON GROUP:
    LONDON GROUP - Guildford:
    Coventry - Guildford:

You can try splitting at one of the principle stations on the route via Oxford such as Leamington Spa, Banbury, Oxford, Reading, etc.

Thanks Yorkie, that involves a walk in Aldershot I presume? :p

Is there a way to avoid London and changing between ash vale and north camp?

Any splits possible?
My standard advice:

"Splitting" the journey into a combination of tickets may work. Use a WebTIS website (e.g. EC, LM etc) and click the info (i) button next to the itinerary you want, then tick 'show all calling points', this shows the places where you could "split" the journey into a combination of tickets (note the train must call on the return journey too). Examples here include Leamington Spa, Banbury, Oxford, Reading...

Note that if you want to return a different day (it is unclear in this case), then unless singles are sensibly priced (unlikely in the case of shorter distance singles) it will not be cheaper to split at stations where only Day Return tickets are available. Therefore, it is generally only best to look at longer distance tickets, where Off Peak Return (SVR) fares can be combined, if coming back a different day. If returning the same day, then you want Off Peak Day (CDR) fares.

G'day

By avoid London, do you mean Euston & Waterloo and the tube between the two? If so then Coventry-Watford Jn-Clapham Jn-Farnham maybe your best bet.

Coventry-Watford Jn-Coventry £24.00 Off peak day return (Valid LM services only)
Watford Jn-Farnham-Watford Jn £16.90 Off peak day return

Total £40.90

Cheers

I normally walk from North Camp to Ash Vale. The rail planners also show changes at Ash, but the timings are tight and the only way to cross over the line is at the level crossing.

The cheapest off peak day return I know of is:-

Coventry-Banbury: £11.80 (Anytime day return)
Banbury-Farnham via Reading: £15.90 (Off peak day return)

Total: £27.70
