So the mainline between Brighton and Burgess Hill was blocked this morning by flooding in the Hassocks area. Staff at Brighton advised catching the 09:41 to Seaford and changing at Lewes for a train to London Victoria.
I took their advice, and checked the National Rail Enquiries app, only to find that the Seaford train would arrive in Lewes at 10:00, narrowly missing the 09:55 (ex-Ore) to London, meaning a potential 25-minute wait for the next London train, and a late arrival for me to a meeting.
Thankfully, someone somewhere in a rare display of common sense, put connecting passengers interests first, and held the 09:55 train for 6-7 minutes, so people could make the connection.
Writing this as we just pull into Wivelsfield, instead of being stood on the platform at Lewes, with still 12 minutes until the next train !!

It seems to be the difference between locally made decisions, and centralised ones which take much longer and may not happen at all.

The issue with this, of course, is that connecting passengers’ interests will directly conflict with those of the potentially far greater numbers of passengers already on board, and on other trains which might be delayed as a knock on effect of that train being held.

Good that you made your meeting, though!

put connecting passengers interests first,
It is good you made your meeting. Consider how many others may have been late for thier appointments because the train was held.

The needs of the many and all that. ( hard to keep that in mind when the Bedford train pulls out of Bletchley as the London train pulls in mind!)

I didn’t realise they were running again!

There's about 3 mins of pathing time on the service @Skimpot flyer mentioned, so the train would have easily made up the 4 min delay it incurred at Lewes, (if it weren't sadly for more considerable delays beyond Haywards Heath, presumably due to the flooding issues encountered nearby.)
