Cross Country Class 170 2 car --> 3 car upgrades

Hi all,
I saw a photo on Twitter recently of the first XC 170 to be increased from a 2 car to 3 car unit. The number was 170623 so am I right to assume that this was previously 170523?

Also, does anyone have any info on which carriage has been added to the set please?

Apologies if there is already a discussion of this nature elsewhere (I did a quick search of relevant keywords and found nothing) and if that is the case then if a mod could merge this post into the active thread that would be great :)

56635 has gone into 170623 (former 170523).

56630-634 will go into 170518-522, presumably in numerical order, and be renumbered to sets 170618-622.

By coincidence there are, currently, schedules in for tomorrow, 0917 Bristol BH WRD to Tyseley LMD and 1513 Tyseley to Bristol

56635 has gone into 170623 (former 170523).

56630-634 will go into 170518-522, presumably in numerical order, and be renumbered to sets 170618-622.

To be fair, 2 of the 3 are related!

The move from Bristol to Tyseley should be a freshly reformed 3 car unit heading north, with the Tyseley to Bristol move being a 2 car going to replace it to receive it's new third car

Set 170520 is down at Bristol, so is presumably coming back as 170620. The Tyseley to Bristol will likely be the next set going down to have the centre car added.

Given the XC 170 Turbostars are currently running in a mix of 3 and 4 coach formations and anything longer cannot operate on the Stansted (and is highly undesirable on Birmingham-Leicester in the Leicester direction) services is now really the time to be adding these extra coaches in to the 2 car units as this is likely to cause a reduction, rather than increase in capacity on these services.

Pre-Covid there were hardly any booked 4 cars anyway - one on a Sunday and that was about it.

Reducing a unit from 4 (pair) to 3 (single) cars will free up units to re-instate the Leicester short workings (for example).

Pre covid those 2 cars were awful on the Stansted services, although with GA now running much better trains it might help a bit I guess.

170620 has come back to Tyseley today running as 5Z71 Barton Hill to Tyseley. Formed as 50520 + 56632 + 79520

Those services aren't running due to a lack of staff rather than a lack of stock so actually it'd free up a unit to sit on the depot all day. At least in the short term adding the extra coaches into 6 of the 3 car units would have allowed some services to go from 3-4 coaches but this will cause them to go in the other direction.

What are they doing to the interiors of the additional vehicles? Just a new seat covers and carpets type thing?

The still unidentified unit that worked to Bristol last saturday returned to Tyseley today as 0949 5Z71, another unidentified unit replaced it working 1327 5Z70 back to Bristol

Thanks @Spirit555 and @DBS92042, so it's not just for centre car additions that Hanson & Hall are moving the 170s at the moment then, they did say on their facebook in December "the first of many over the next 12 months"

The 2021 P5 'Combine' shows all 170530 - 170535 (incl) as 2-car units and 170618 - 170623 (incl) as 3-car units (with 5663x cars inserted) as being in service. It also states (p13) that it is "updated to the start of January 2021". I was surprised to see that all these units were in service in these formations at this time.

Now it may be that P5 has jumped the gun on these somewhat. Either way, I'd be very grateful if someone could provide the dates of entry into service and/or dates each of these units were accepted by their respective operating companies, please - many thanks.

Only two units from 170518-523 have received their centre cars so far with (I think) a further unit in progress. Definitely P5 jumping the gun by some considerable margin.

Many thanks 43096. I suspected that was the case. Can you tell me which they were, and when they entered service. Are any of the new two-cars (530-535) in service - and if so from when? Thank for you help with this.
