Since the current situation began, XC have been operating just one train per hour on the Birmingham - North East route. However, for a few weeks now, quite a lot of the journeys are having the stop at Chesterfield omitted.

Does anyone know why this is?

Let’s hope this is just a temporary measure, as not only does it reduce direct travel opportunities for the Chesterfield and north Derbyshire area it also reduces fare competition between Chesterfield and Derby

Surely removing the notoriously expensive XC isn’t going to make much difference? Or are they less of a rip off there?

Not sure what sort of fare competition you're referring to? There aren't any dedicated walk-up fares - the only dedicated fares are Advance fares, which are only rarely going to be cheaper than a CDS/CDR etc. as appropriate.

EMR under normal circumstances offer advance tickets between Chesterfield and Derby for £5.10 single even in the morning peak when the walk up single is £12.70.

If XC continues to omit Chesterfield then EMR May increase advance fares.

The Chesterfield to Derby advances are useful for split ticketing especially at peak times

£5ish is reasonable for nearly 30 miles, nearly £13 is unacceptable.

Just noticed that tonight they are not. Don't understand why at all, same trains passing through on the same timetables just omitting the stop of a fairly major station for no obvious reason
XC normally soak up a lot of peak travel on local journeys such as Winchester to Southampton. Missing Winchester puts those passengers onto SWR trains which have far greater capacity.

Wasn't it originally something to do with requiring additional dwell time elsewhere to maintain social distancing? Or was that a different TOC?

Might be, I thought it was said down here it was to reduce numbers onboard.

Nice theory, not so good in reality. Take 1O08 as an example. It misses out Winchester, then has three minutes pathing time approaching Shawford followed by the usual one minute dwell at Southampton Airport. Anyone travelling South on 1O08 wanting to go to Winchester has to get off at Basingstoke and wait 37 minutes for the next train to Winchester.

Regarding social distancing, from my observations, people queue up to get off just as close as they did before Covid, assuming that the train is busy enough to require a queue.

I believe XC said it was to allow additional time for boarding and alighting at the more heavily used stations.

Surprised the mention of Guildford not being served hasn't prompted a "is this the end?"!

I am genuinely concerned that it really might be “the end” to xc services to those stations currently not serve and the end to Bristol-Manchester & Southampton/Reading-Newcastle services especially as a new ‘Franchise’ contract has been agreed

The later has tentative plans to become Southampton/Reading-Hull (omitting Sheffield for some reason) after HS2.

Capacity problem between Chesterfield and Swinton maybe, still given what happened last week sending trains via Barrow Hill in regular service doesn't seem a bad idea.

Possibly. Just seems a rather important station to omit.
