Banbury is correct. If you "bar" someone / something then you Ban it and Bury is in the Manchester area. Your turn, Seacook.

Short line leads to a station

Time for a hint. This clue could appear in a cryptic crossword as it includes both a cryptic part and a definition of the answer. To solve it you should ignore the latter part since all of the clues in the thread have the same type of answer.

I am no good at crosswords! The only "short line" in could think of would be a Branch. So my guess would be Branchton

I am afraid not. If "short line" indicated branch then the clue would be unsound because TON is not clued.

Further hint: the words "short" and "line" are not to be taken together. Misdirection is something I strive for in cryptic clues.

apologies if it's already done, I haven't read the whole thread ( I suppose I really ought to use the seArch function first)

This is the final chance to find the answer. I hope it is clear that the clue type is not a hidden word or an anagram but a charade type.

short (find a word meaning short/small/tiny)
line (+ a kind of line)
leads to a station (definition of the answer)
