Hi Everyone,
I have only just come back to the hobby after many years away, and I must say that it was lurking on this forum and watching "Ian Poole's" youtube videos that were responsible for my return. So here goes.
I live in Cumbernauld, which is also my local station. I am a retired (63) railwayman so have the perks to enable me to carry out this hobby. I am very much into all things transport, planes, buses and trains.
On Monday 05/09/2016 while browsing I saw that I could book a room on Laterooms.com at the Britannia Hotel in Wolverhampton for £27. So that was booked, pay at hotel, and I had an early night.
I was up at 0445 on Tuesday morning and after, shower and shave, and taking the dogs out, it was off to Cumbernauld Station for the 0612 to Motherwell on board 320314. An arrival at Motherwell at 0632, 5 minutes early left me plenty of time to catch the 0644 to Carlisle which was 390005. A red pen at Motherwell was newly refurbished 320417 coupled to 318256 on a Lanark to Glasgow Central working. Arrival at Carlisle was at 0754, 11minutes late. At Carlisle were 156507 and 350402. I left Carlisle on board 221106 + 221111 which were 9 minutes late and no reason given for late running on either train. An uneventful trip then followed with not much seen on the way. 87035, D1842 and 92010 were seen at Crewe, Only an 08 at Warrington. Arrival in Wolverhampton was at 1038, 5 minutes late. I then went to the Britannia and paid my £27.00 for the night. Then it was off bus spotting for a while. I had also purchased a Wolverhampton Plus bus ticket costing £3.30 and covering all of West Midlands area and the Midland Metro. Great value for money. All bus and the Metro journeys were made with this ticket.
Just to let you know where I went, after an hour and a bit in Wolverhampton bus spotting, it was off to Walsall on board ALX400 4598 BX54DDA on the 529 Walsall. Again an hour or so at Walsall and it was time to go to West Bromwich on board Scania single decker 1855 BX58SXV on the 4H bound for Halesowen. West Bromwich bus station is conviently sited for to view the trams at West Bromwich Central. I saw 12 trams in my time here. I left West Bromwich on board tram 30 to The Hawthorns, where I boarded 172216 + 172212 for the journey to Snow Hill. Again an hour or so bus spotting before going to Moor Street for some unit spotting.
At Moor St , I was only there about 5 minutes when 68014 rolled in. I took this at 1755 to Rowley Regis. My first 68. At Rowley Regis, I boarded 172334 back to Moor St arriving at 1845. Then 68011 rolled in a minute or so late and I took this to Stourbridge Jn, where I boarded 139001 to trundle down to Stourbridge Town. Then it was on board ALX400 4557 BL53EEV on board the 256 back to Wolverhampton.
The room in the hotel was quite nice. I had a bath and went to bed. I was woken at 0430 when a lorry stopped under the window for about 45 minutes with the freezer unit running. I woke up at 0800 and went across the road to the Weatherspoons for breakfast. Porridge, full English with tea and toast for £5.50, excellent value.
I went to Wolverhampton station and boarded the first train which was 220022 which departed at 0915 and arrived at Stockport 1 minute early at 1023. I then got 323235 at 1029 to Piccadilly, for a few hours bus and tram spotting. I went to Piccadilly Gardens where I saw a good amount of buses and 53 trams. Lowest number was 3001 and the highest 3118. Then it was time to head home.
Back at Piccadilly I had 185111 + 185144 on the 1346 to Preston. Changed on to 390121 on the 1442 to Glasgow Central arriving 7 minutes late at 1708.
I hope that this report is ok.
