Full Steam Ahead: Steam Spectacle 2018 -Trier

BOOK NOW: 28. APRIL TO 1. MAY 2018

You should keep this date free: a great railroad nostalgia event awaits you in 2018 in the Greater Trier region. This event is a real spectacle, not just for railroad enthusiasts. The enthusiasm that the historic steam locomotives can arouse is timeless and appeals to young and old alike. That is why the crowd comes from far and near to the event. Be there.

4 days of Railway Nostalgia
The large Eisenbahn event takes place in the greater Trier area. The event starts on Saturday, April 28th and runs until Tuesday, May 1st. In the course of the railways, many interesting rail routes will be crossed along the river runs of the Mosel and Saar as well as in the Eifel region. The majority of the over 100 trains, which will be used during the spectacle, are covered by steam locomotives. But train enthusiasts can also look forward to historic diesel and electric locomotives. The passenger cars also deserve the title of "historic rail vehicles".

The first planned trips with steam are fixed!

28th April | 29 April | 1 May 2018:

· 2 train pairs Luxembourg - Trier and back
· 3 train pairs Trier - Nennig and back
· 1 train pair Trier - Wellen and back
· 2 train pairs Trier - Bullay and back
· 3 train pairs Trier - Wittlich and back
· 2 train pairs Trier - Saarbrücken and back
· 1 train pair Trier - Merzig and back (with historic electric locomotive)
· 4 train pairs Trier - Gerolstein and back
· 1 train pair Trier - Bitburg-Erdorf and back
· 1 train pair Koblenz - Trier and back (historical TEE train with electric locomotive)
· 2 train pairs Koblenz - Wittlich and back (historical TEE train with electric locomotive)

April 30, 2018:

· 3 train pairs Trier - Saarbrücken and back
· 1 train pair Trier - Brohl and back (with historic electric locomotive)
· Special train on Brohltalbahn

Depending on the final timetable adjustment with DB Netz AG and the available vehicles, changes are still possible (planning status July 2017). In addition, it is already pointed out that when there is a high risk of forest fires, the steam trains can be covered with e-loks or diesel locomotives and also with train failures.

Soon more information here and at www.dampfspektakel.info
The planning for the railway nostalgia event 2018 is in full swing. The new website for the event will be online this year. At www.dampfspektakel.info you will soon be informed about all the events, the latest news, important information about timetables, tickets and prices. So check it out from time to time.

The steam spectacle 2018 is the steam event of the year, which you must not miss.

The provisional timetables are now on line together with ticket information at :-
http://www.dampf-spektakel.de/
The URL in the post above is not working.
It would appear that us Brits enjoying a day's unlimited travel for peanuts (as in the Rheinpfalz dampfspektakel of a few years ago) will be a thing of the past. The normal regional day tickets will not be valid on the steam-hauled services this time, and a ticket for unlimited travel on them and the scheduled RE- and RB- services for all 4 days will cost about £170. Still, for such a great event this is a relatively small price to pay. Day tickets covering from one tariff zone to the whole regional network are priced at £23 - £63. One advantage of the more expensive fares might be less crowded trains, but I will hold my breath on that one!

Thanks for the link. The first time I can actually do 3 full days and the prices double :( but TBH having experienced the loadings I'm not entirely surprised - and I think it was at least hinted at from the start!

Having booked to be there for the Saturday and Sunday, I set about deciding what best to do - lineside or ride. I saw no point in booking a day 'gesamtnetz' ticket - the services are too infrequent with long layovers at destinations to make it worth the while - and I discounted purchasing the 2-zone ticket for similar reasons. However, the one-zone option is quite attractive at 27 Eu. and I have constructed an itinerary in which all seven daily steam diagrams can be sampled during one day and within that zone, riding to Bullay, Saarburg, Wasserbillig and Daufenbach (Kylltal). On the other day I will use the Rheinland-Pfalz day rover ticket on scheduled local services to get to a variety of photo locations again all within zone 1 of the dampfspektakel event. This should allow me to photograph at about eight lineside locations (although all but three are in more urban settings) and to photograph all but three of the steam-hauled trains. If anyone is interested in a copy of my plan you are welcome to email me..... ron(at)dalesman(dot)net

Did this event a few years ago and cannot recommend it highly enough.

The year I went was the infamous one where apparently every driver and loco owner was dragged into a mass 'please explain' meeting when the 80 km/h PSR (?) section along the Mosel was seeing some 'enthusiastic' running.

Good afternoon,
now for free download on the Dampfspektakel website a new brochure (pdf, 1MB) with detailed timetables, diagrams, the stock planning and some inspiration for taking pictures along the lines. It's only in German, but the diagrams are self-explaining, I suppose...
See you in Trier!

Thanks for the heads-up.
