XC contract out their prosecutions to an unknowledgeable debt collection agency, who are known for not listening to reason, going for innocent victims and losing cases that have resulted in substantial damages payouts by XC to their victims.

I'd be really interested to understand more about this allegation please as it may well be helpful to others. Could you provide some details please?

We are allowed to board the train at Alderley Edge when the ticket office is closed and buy a ticket on the train. No problem from Northern whatsoever. There is even a poster sometimes on the booking office saying they are closed and to please buy a ticket on the train.

That is the correct procedure nationally when ticket offices are closed.

National Railway Byelaw 18.3 (2005) makes that a clear exception to the otherwise strict liability requirement to buy a ticket before boarding when the ticket office is open.

That's nothing new, even East Midlands Trains (who are the Holy grail of Revenue Protection) advise to do this at stations with no ticket purchasing facilities. It is if there are purchasing facilities, including Permit To Travel machines and you fail to use them, then you are committing an offence by boarding a train.

You do them a disservice. They know very well how to bully and harass innocent people. Why stick by the rules when behaving like a cowboy clamper is so much more profitable?

As for the OP, it'll depend on what the online receipt for the ticket showed. If Oakham is a collection facility then the OP is right. If not, it gets more clouded. I don't agree that the OP should have to pay again because EMT don't want to provide the appropriate facilities.

What do you mean by the 'Holy Grail of revenue protection'?

Can we try to stay on topic? There was no facility at the OP's station. And your statement doesn't universally apply; I could add "...unless the train is operated by a company who allows tickets to be bought on board (e.g. GC/HT) or there is a notice stating you can buy on the train (e.g. Wakefield Kirkgate) or you are using a payment method not accepted by the machines"

The OP was not travelling on the East Coast Mainline, so I doubt GC/HT's little exceptions apply, nor does the situation at Wakefield Kirkgate!

So were you talking universally or about this situation specifically?
