The railway trade unions have announced a 50 hour strike from Sunday 2200 14th May.
Does anything run? Or is there a skeleton service? Are the private operators affected?
I am in Munich with friends - it looks like it will be more time in Munich and less travelling about!

In contrast to the last strike were tickets could be used for several days after the end of the strike, this is not possible this time! Tickets for the travel period 14.05-16.05. can only be used up to and including 14.05.

Quoting from https://www.bahn.com/en/contact/special-goodwill:
Due to a strike, there will be restrictions in rail transport in the period from 14.05. to 16.05.2023.

If you have booked a long-distance journey for this period, you now have the following options:
  • Are your travel plans flexible? Can you change the date or time of your journey? If so, you can use your ticket at any time until 14.05.2023. The validity ticket will no longer be restricted to the selected train, so you can simply choose another one.
  • Your train has been or will be cancelled, and you have decided not to travel. Your passenger rights rights apply in this situation, as anyone who decides against travelling can receive a full refund of their ticket price.

This is due to the fact that next Thursday (Ascension Day) is a public holiday and heavy travel is expected as people may take a day off on Friday and enjoy an extended weekend.

That is always possible, since that follows directly from EU Regulation 1371/2007, article 16, options b and c.

Looks like they have taken a leaf out of the British TOCs' book by pretending that the only rights passengers have here are to travel on another date chosen by DB or to get a refund.

Something linke that. It appears that DB want to prevent too many people from travelling on the always very busy Ascension Day and the Wednesday before. However, it looks to me they've formulated that in such a way that it breaches EU legislation, German legislation and their own t&c.
Edit: they've now changed the page. They deleted the explicite sentence that you can't use your tickets after the strike and left in the sentence that the regular passengers' rights apply, which implicitly means you can use your ticket after the strike.

Don't they have a 14 day notice period over there, or has this been announced two weeks ago?

Dates announced on Thursday morning, with warning that there would be a strike imminently a day or two before.

No such notice required in Germany.
Giving 48 hours is pretty much the norm so people can "prepare" but even that is not inshrined by law.

The DB is taking the Union to court today at 1200. They are asking for the strike to be declared illegal as 50 hours is excessive.

No English language source yet. According to WDR the strike is called off. A settlement has been reached out of court.
Negotiations on pay will continue at the end of May. So further strikes might be an issue in the future.

An English language link to it:

Just read DSO and there it was announced this strike will not go on, as under juridical pressure an arrangement has been found. it MAY however still have impact on some minor local ´private´ regional railways when they have their own special arrangement/wages-tariff.
There was also a notice on what is now the new rule for booked tickets yes/not valid all the time, which I have not read. The very few impacted Brits reading this will likely find their own sources earlier.
