Will somebody advise me how to specify a lounge seat when making a reservation?

Thanks

It depends on the train you use and in which class you are travelling.

Seats in the lounges are available in classes 403 and 406 as well as classes 411 (tilting ICE with seven coaches), 415 (tilting ICE with five coaches) and class 605 (tilting ICE with diesel power).

Classes 403 and 406
Standard class
Coach 21 or 31
Seats 11/13, 15/17 (front row)
Seats 12/14, 16/18 (second row)
Seats 21/23 (third row)
Window seats are 11, 12, 15, 16, 21, the others are next to the aisle

First Class
Coach 29 or 39
Seats 102, 104/106 (front row)
Seats 101, 103/105 (second row)
Seats 94/96 (third row)
Seats 96, 105 and 106 have a window, seats 94, 103, 104 are next to the aisle. Seats 101 and 102 are single seats and therefore have both, window and aisle.

I recommend seats in the second row of the first class lounge, as they are installed a little bit higher than those in the first row. I experience you have a slightly better view from here (which of course only helps at all if the driver doesn't blank the window out).

Classes 411, 415 and 605
Standard class
Coach 21 or 31
Seats 11/13, 15/17 (front row)
Seats 12/14, 16/18 (second row)
Window seats are 11, 12, 15, 16, the others are next to the aisle

First Class
Coach 28 or 38
Seats 11, 13/15 (front row)
Seats 12, 14/16 (second row)
Seats 15 and 16 have a window, seats 13 and 14 are next to the aisle. Seats 11 and 12 are single seats and therefore have both, window and aisle.

If anybody shows me how to attach photos here, I can also send charts.

If you book your tickets on www.bahn.de (English available), you can choose your seats directly from the seat map.

This is my first try to include a link to photos resp. graphics in a post. If it works, find enclosed the seat maps of DB's classes 403, 406, 407, 411, 415 and 605 - we recently talked about it:

The screen in the lounge can be switched opaque (I've never heard this word before - thanks a lot!) by the driver. It also gets blank automatically if the train doesn't get electricity supply (which happens on certain short sections of the network (technical reason, don't ask me for details in English please :D).

I did hear, that it also turns opaque automatically if the driver does an emergency break, as the reason for the break could be a person standing on the tracks and you doesn't want to force passengers to follow the scenery. But this myth was never confirmed nor denied to me.

As I was asked about the introduction of the ICE 4 and mentioned that it would be baptized in Berlin today, here are, unfortunately in German, some facts about the train for those who are interested:

http://www.deutschebahn.com/de/pres...medienpaket_ice4.html?start=0&itemsPerPage=10

Thanks Jaap. Most of us have translate button on our browser. The technical stuff is OK. It's colloquial use that gives problems. All appreciated.

When I traveled on one from Koeln to Amsterdam the only time the driver blanked the window was during the change from 15kv to 1500dc when he had to drop the pans.

As mentioned in an earlier post, the window blanks automatically when the train doesn't have power from the overheads. It always happens when passing through the border station at Emmerich. It happens in the rear lounge as well, even if the rear cab is unoccupied.

Thanks for the charts, Jaap - next question. How to tell which type of trainset is running on the desired route?

Thanks for the charts, Jaap - next question. How to tell which type of trainset is running on the desired route?

That's not too easy.

Basically: between Frankfurt Airport and Cologne only classes 403, 406 and 407 are able to run. The chance of getting a class 403 or 406 (with lounge seats available) is quite high, as only 16 class 407 exist and some of them are already needed for the Frankfurt - Paris route.

If you are on a Frankfurt - Amsterdam or Brussels service, it is quite definite that a class 406 will be in service; class 403 is not able to run outside Germany and class 407 is not allowed in Belgium and the Netherlands. The only thing that can happen is that not enough class 406 are available and for the section from Frankfurt to Cologne or Dusseldorf a class 403 or 407 is used and you need to change trains there into a class 406 coming in from Amsterdam or Brussels.

Classes 411 and 415 are mainly used on Frankfurt - Leipzig - Dresden and Frankfurt - Vienna. (Hamburg-) Berlin - Leipzig - Nuremberg - Munich is also mainly served by class 411.

To make sure, inform me about your journey plans and I'll try to find out. :)
