A 6Z09 ran from Aldwarke to Tinsley last Friday evening, STP schedule here:
Could it have been some Stocksbridge wagons going for storage?

Apparently not. It is an occasional train of stainless from Tinsley to Aldwarke and back, runs every few months. It went over with 6 loaded BVA's on Thursday and returned empty on Friday, loco then went off to Doncaster.
Usual wagons for Deepcar are BBA's, and I'm told they are all stopped at the moment due to cracks.

Bang goes that theory! Never knew about that stainless working though. Thanks.

It's been reported on local Facebook pages that there was a track gang and vehicles on the branch all last week, replacing sleepers etc.

Interesting. I was down in town today, and there has been extensive clearing of vegetation on the line near the Wicker arches, and the bridge over Brunswick Road is all sheeted over, I assume they are attending to the structure. Obviously they are doing quite a lot of work on the line, can't imagine it is just because a railtour is due to go up there.
Reminds me of many years ago, they repainted Rotherham South Junction signal box and three weeks later demolished it!
Let's hope this is different.

Vegetation could well be purely for a charter, NR have been billed for scratching the paintwork before! Depending on the condition of the line, it's possible that it is only for a railtour, as they need to make the line safe for the passenger train, but I'd guess Bridge works is for something larger as usually they'd just ask for a very low speed over the structure. Sleepers would also be a lot of work for 1 railtour, especially as when it's on the branch it's not getting in the way of anything else.

I’m local to the area and walk past the work that’s being carried out regularly - it’s still going on and has been for months now.

Seems quite extensive and has now required long term closure of a significant pedestrian walkway/cycle route.

Does anyone have any update as to what is going on? Surely all this work can’t just be to accommodate a railtour.

Well on Traksy this morning the word TREE appears in the Deepcar berth, so I assume some work is going on. I know last year a steel train went up the branch and hit several branches, some ending up stuck in the side grilles. One of the crew described Deepcar as "Deepcar forest"

Sorry, I should’ve been clearer.

I was referring to the work being undertaken around the bridge beside Sheffield Ring Road near the junction with Savile Street.

Specific Location

****Update****

I went to take a closer look at the work being done this morning - it’s really quite extensive.

The line is now very visible, for those that don’t know the area it used to be covered in undergrowth and at points it was barely possible to see the line at all.

And the bridge work is long term - not scheduled to be completed until next month.

I’ve attached some photos for those that are interested.

All seems rather excessive if the line is at risk of closure, no?

Interesting, thanks for sharing.

Supertram have confirmed to me that they have no plans of taking over the line.

Perhaps there’s a possibility that freight use may rise again should activity at the Stocksbridge plant increase again.

It could be possibly be no more than someone using their end of year budget up and for no long term purpose other than making things look more presentable .

I’ve covered 6J57 for over 10yrs with photographs of 20’s at Deepcar from the 90’s , although there have been up and downs in the volume of traffic I cannot recall a gloomier outlook than the present.

Marcus

50008 Thunderer has just run up to Deepcar from Worksop.

Originally this was a run from Belmont in Doncaster to Worksop via Maltby and back a couple of times for route familiarisation in connection with some future engineering works. I went to photo it at Shireoaks, and then discovered one of the runs had changed and it was going up to Deepcar, so I went to Brunswick Road to photo it passing the old Victoria station.
As it approached the station it stopped and half a dozen orange jackets got out, wandered around the area for a few minutes, then got back in before it set off for Deepcar!

Any chance it could be connected to the railtour on April 8th?

Surely wouldn't be doing route learning for the track demolition train.. it would be a fantastic sign if they are expecting the business to return though..

No idea why it was changed st the last minute. Could be in connection with the railtour. Is this the first time a 50 has been to Deepcar?

Will post a picture when I can get them off the camera.

I don’t think it’s the first time, as there are pictures of one going over Woodhead so it will have passed through a very different looking Deepcar.

Looking forward to seeing your picture, certainly a great and very unusual catch.

Pictures as promised. Still not got a definitive reason why there was a change of plan though.

You beat me to it, got the same info this morning.
To answer my own question, this is not the first time a 50 has run on this line. A Footex from Manchester area ran to Wadsley Bridge on 14 March 1970, 1Z12 with D414, only known record of the class on this route.

It was route learning for the charter, nothing more.

The railtour won’t be the last thing up the branch , there may even be something before but the 2Z02 York - York which I believe is Caroline is paying a visit on the 3rd May .

Nothing that actually justifies the lines existence then. Steel. Network Rail won't keep it maintained on a hobby basis. It will fall into disrepair.

What happened to the "restoring your railway" bid for this line? You'd like to think that lessons from the past would be learnt and the right of way retained.

Network rail can't just abandon it though, it has to go through a consultation process with TOCs and FOCs and if they agree then it goes public. I think it's quite a high chance that FOCs will push as hard as possible for retention.

It didn't get through, because there wasn't any case for funding. The Right of way can be retained by a cycleway if they want.

Have you got a source for that bit please?

Stocksbridge appears in the list of received bids, but not in the list of unsuccessful bids. As all bids were assessed on the business case, it can reasonably be inferred that there was not sufficient case. For context, the restoration of services to Kilimarsh and Barrow Hill did receive funding and the timetable implications were looked at.

Regarding the cycleway, there's not really a source for that as it's not really a policy/legal thing but more a 'physically not building anything that can't be easily torn up' thing. A Cycle way has been used in the UK and abroad to maintain rail alignments for strategic use (Cuckoo trail, Forest way in Sussex, for instance)
