A derailed freight train between Sunderland and Hartlepool caused serious disruption between Newcastle and Middlesbrough.

Network Rail had specialist teams at the scene of the incident — near Ryhope — to inspect the freight train and organise its recovery.

Trains from Sunderland could not run towards Hartlepool, and instead diverted via Newcastle and Darlington.

Trains from Hartlepool towards Sunderland were also delayed by up to 15 minutes.

Network Rail anticipated disruption would continue until at least 3pm Wednesday but it lasted for several more hours.
Looks like we've seen massive disruption today, including GC and Northern services. They have been diverting via Darlington.

Often never is - seems most freight derailments - are in yards and then very minor (with the odd exception of course) - overnight / weekend engineering train moves -often doing odd moves seem to be at risk of mishap. As it often was.
