considering the state of the track in Poland, it's hardly surprising that a train would derail on points

Especially if he approached them at the speed he did. It would be interesting to know whether, routinely, that service would crossover or whether that was an out of course event and the driver didn't expect to be changing lines.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was crossing over for a section of single line working. Half the country is in bits as they are rebuilding for Euro 2012 next year.
