Wow that was a busy day! By the amount of winners you got it sounds like you need a LOT in London!

I had an almost equally excellent run out of Paddington the other week, it was far superior to the slow run I'd had the day before. Storming through Slough at top speed was most enjoyable, although I'm still undecided as to whether I prefer flying through MKC or Slough more.

Epic fail with the failure to note all the sets on the Central line, but you'll get better at it over time. Granted, last time I had a major session down there I had Kite assisting with the numbers, but I'm definitely adopting the method of just noting the 92 numbers to avoid any potential incorrect recordings. Which would make sense except I noted all the driving sets as 91xxx in my needs lists, oops!

Yes, I do needs lots in London! I have scattered amounts of each class, no where near clearing anything though! My dad really isn't into "bashing" as such, so it makes it harder! Never been non stop through MKC so not really sure what it feels like, but Slough is normally alright in the morning, but we normally smell the brake dust in the evening :p It was my fault I missed the units! I forgot what way they where heading and ran the wrong way up the platform!

I did similar once in Brussels, and Central is a nightmare of a station to run up and down from platform to platform, so imagine how awful it is if you forget to get a number!

If it makes you feel better I've done the same thing with the Central Line. Forgotten which way round the platforms are and instead of going to the rear to be able to ID the parts as they rush in, I ended up at the front.

One slight advantage the 800s will have over HSTs is no more long walks to grab the ID of the leading powercar at Paddington!

That's true! Normally at Weston I head straight out the door and then run up the road for a view thru the gate as it departs!

Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly is the Weymouth Wizard? If its the summer Bristol-Weymouth service shouldn't it be a HST? That 67 looks good in DBS red too.

It is the Summer Saturday HST from Bristol TM to Weymouth and return. Last week, June 3rd however, it was worked as a 67 hauled LHCS due to HSTs being required for additional services in connection with the Champions League Final in Cardiff.

17/06 Trip to Swansea

It was another Saturday morning, and for once I was not awake at 05:30 but roughly an hour later at 06:40! A take the walk to the station at around 7pm and for starters pick up a return to Cardiff Central! The purpose of today's trip was to clear off the regularly served shacks between Cardiff and Swansea! Soon enough the 07:25 to Bristol is arriving formed of double duds 43086 + 43031! I alight these pair and 20 minutes later dud 150232 rolls in on the 08:23 service to take me as far as Newport! Another quick change at Newport puts me on board another dud! 170109 for the ride over to Cardiff! I spend around 15 minutes in Cardiff before I watch 55009 Alycidon arrive and depart before heading over to the concourse and to the TVM’s to pick up a return to Swansea!

D9009 'Alycidon', The Welsh Central Liner, Cardiff Central 17.6.17 by DSH Trains, on Flickr

Once the tickets are picked up, I make a quick run over to platform 3 for the 10:18 departure formed of dud 150213 which was a stopping service, but was the next train for around 40 minutes! I took this as far as my first new shack of the day, Bridgend, I spent around 35 minutes having a look around the bus station and town centre before heading back to the station for the 11:15 service to Swansea formed of a GWR HST which just happened to be cancelled due to a HST power car catching fire at Swindon! I wait 10 minutes before dud 175003 rolls in to take me to my second new shack of the day Port Talbot Parkway! 5 minutes is spent there before dud 153312 rolls in on a stopper to take me to my third shack of the day, Swansea! I spend around 3 hours in Swansea, exploring the town and having a look around the bus station before heading back to the station at 15:30.

Arriva Trains Wales 175003, Port Talbot Parkway 17.6.17 by DSH Trains, on Flickr

Next, I boarded dud 175103, for the short ride back as far as Neath, my fourth new shack of the day, a 30-minute wait is taken here, I also pop down to the bus station to see what is around before joining the 15:41 service formed of (finally) winner 43022 and dud 43142 for the run all the way back to Cardiff Central! A quick run over to platform 2 puts me onboard dud 170107 as far as Newport and when I jump off at Newport I really appreciate the AC on the 170 as it is boiling! I didn’t hang around here long as 10 minutes later I board a boiling dud 150239 as far as Bristol TM!

The train arrived back into Bristol at 18:00 and surprise surprise, my next train to Weston was being delayed by a signal failure, but at the same time, the train 10 minutes behind was delayed at Bristol Parkway for unknown reasons, so my choice was either a stopper back to Weston or a fast HST, I choose to take the HST, we departed behind the stopper and a XC voyager, it was a slow run to Yatton until the stopper got looped and the voyager sped ahead and we were soon approaching Weston at around 18:50, 40 minutes late (The train was formed of double duds 43188 + 43093!)

A good day out. It was so hot that day though. Nice to see 55009 and clear a few stations. I don't know if I've been to Swansea. I need to have a sort out of what lines I've been on before I forget some or just don't get round to doing it.

Swansea was well worth the visit! And so were the other stations I got off at! Plenty of decent bus stations as well! :p:lol:

24/6 Devon Ranger
A week after my last trip, I was up at half 6 again, I made the walk down to the station as usual and picked up a return to Tiverton Parkway and a Devon Ranger, todays plan was to clear some shacks as well as try and pick up my final 143, 612! I boarded the 07:08 which is a Saturday only train formed of a HST set, today's power cars were double duds, 43153 + 43158! I take these as far as Exeter St Davids, before picking up a Tea in the pumpkin before heading to platform 1 to await the 08:14 towards Exmouth! Double duds 150128 + 153382 roll in to take me to my first shack of the day, Digby & Sowton, 5 minutes later a pair of double 143’s roll in, 143621 was on the front, but I was unable to get the rear, We arrive into Dawlish Warren and an announcement is put out saying we stop here for 10 minutes to let a fast train pass, I take this time to get out and collect the front unit (after reversing at Exeter), It was another 143, I crossed my fingers as I peer across to the other side of the unit to pick of the number, and its 143612! That was easier than I thought! I move onto 143612 for the ride to Dawlish!

GWR 143621 + 143612, Dawlish 24.6.17 by DSH Trains, on Flickr

A quick run over the bridge is made for the 09:33 service formed of double duds 143603 + 143617 to my second shack of the day, Starcross! A lovely little station looking over the estuary. 20 minutes later dud 150247 rolls in to take me all the way back to Dawlish. The plan here was to wait at Dawlish until two tours had past, the late running Mazey Day Cornishman & Royal Scot working the Dartmouth Express, these both rolled past at round 12:30 after I had a nice all-day breakfast in a café in the town centre at Dawlish (which was lovely!). I made my way back to the station at 13:00 and 9 minutes later 150247 rolls in again to take me all the way to Totnes! A half hour wait is made here at Totnes, A quick visit to the café in the signal box picks me up a tea, before sitting on the platform and waiting my next train roll in!

GWR 57605 + Sleeper Mk3's, Totnes 24.6.17 by DSH Trains, on Flickr

My next train in fact was the weekly LHCS set which had winner 57605 on the front! I sat in one of the recently refurbished coaches, which was nicely done, but the seats where not very good for a long haul journey! I alight the set at Teignmouth take a quick picture and run onto the other platform to join double duds 150239 + 153329 all the way to another new shack, Torre! 20 minutes later and the same units roll back in to take me to Newton Abbot! At this point I was feeling hungry, and with 20 minutes till my next train, I made my way to KFC up the road, making my way back to the station with a lunchbox and 2 minutes to spare before double duds 43133 + 43xxx roll in to take me non-stop to Exeter St Davids!
Once back at Exeter, I join winner 159010 and dud 159017 for the short hop to Exeter Central, before jumping onboard double winners 159011 + 159108 back to St Davids, I had a bit of time now before my train back to Taunton, and worked out I could get a final shack score for the day, I headed to platform 3 and boarded the 16:55 serviced formed of duds 153382 + 150128 to my final shack of the day, Exeter St Thomas, this now clearing the line between Exeter and Paignton! A quick walk down and up the footbridge, trying to avoid the stench/puddle of p**s on the floor, I make double duds 143603 + 143617 for the ride back to Exeter St Davids, arriving at 17:11. I make my way to platform 5 for the 17:23 service formed of double duds 43321 + 43285, before connecting onto dud 150001 for the ride back to Weston.

25/6 Return to Bristol
A decided to have a trip to Bristol on this Sunday to see If I would be lucky enough to get at least one required train! I arrived at the station for the 16:28 XC service to Bristol Temple Meads, luckily formed of winner 220025! A quick change at Bristol TM puts me onboard double duds 43175 + 43056 back to Weston!

A great read about my neck of the woods there Dhass.
You managed to fit a lot of moves in with a lot winners in the bag too.
Starcross is in a very pretty place and looking at the photo of Dawlish I'm assuming it was looking at it's best with the tide in?

The big red stone building on the right just after the station as you head west is an old Brunel Atmospheric Railway pumping house and when I was a kid it was a museum about the Atmospheric Railway for a while, downstairs they'd rigged up a short length of track with a pipe in the middle and a little truck you could ride on with two old vacuum cleaners sucking the air out of the pipe to make the truck go along. It was interesting really. Although not for long.

Sorry about the wee at St Thomas. I should've gone.

Ah yes! I can agree with that! Sometimes you wait years to find a unit!

The tide was in at Starcross! I never knew that about the red building, but to be fair never noticed it lol! You may need some bladder control pills then Mr C as there was a big puddle! :p:lol:

2/7 Reading & Oxford

So instead of the normal Saturday trip, today was a Sunday, and the plan was to head East towards Reading & Didcot, with also a hour or two planned in Reading to visit the Reading Buses Depot during its annually open day, which happened to be today. The first train out of Weston on a Sunday is the 08:11 and I made that with a minute to spare, today it was formed of dud 43093 and winner 43034! I take these as far as Didcot before alighting and joining winner 165101 on a delayed service to Oxford. Once at Oxford, I have 2 minutes to join winner 165104 and dud 166209 all the way back to Reading on a stopping service.

Once at Reading, it was a walk outside the station to catch the shuttle bus to Reading Depot, spending around an hour in the depot before catching the bus back! Another 15 minutes was spent outside the station photographing buses before I head back onto the station and board the 14:14 service back to Didcot formed of double duds 43194 + 43144. A 5-minute wait was had at Didcot before double duds 43142 + 43022 rolled in to take me as far as Oxford! I had decided to try to head to Bicester to try and clear off the shack and a few units along the way. When I reach Didcot, I check GWR Journey Check and notice trains are starting to be cancelled due to staff shortages, I notice the 14:54 and 17:53 are already cancelled and did not wish to be stuck as services to Weston on a Sunday evening are very sparse! I abandon the plan to get to Bicester today, and head back to Didcot on double duds 165104 + 166209!

On arrival, back at Didcot, the 15:53 is cancelled, Great! Which means I will now miss the 17:30 off Bristol back to Weston! I have to catch the 16:29 service formed of duds 43155 + 43164 back to Bristol Parkway before joining winner 221138, 20 minutes later to take me back to Bristol Temple Meads, by this time I have missed the service back to Weston at 17:30, and now the 18:30 is cancelled! The next train now being back at 19:05! 2 trains loads of people would use this train, but now a XC voyager has terminated and passengers are being advised to catch it! Great! 150104 rolls in at 19:05 to take the full train back to Taunton, dropping me off at Weston at 19:43, 2 hours 15 minutes after I was meant to get home!

4/7 Freedom Travelpass

A couple of days later and I was back on the rails, I was meant to do this trip the day before, But I managed to oversleep so postponed it until the next day! The plan for today was to sample the Turbos which were newly introduced onto the Severn Beach line, as well as clear some HST power cars and hopefully clear my last two GWR west units, as well as clearing many shacks! I walk down to the station at 07:35 and pick up a Freedom Travelpass, a zonal ticket for area which covers all rail lines and buses from Weston to Bristol and Bath. The 07:49 soon rolls in formed of dud 43002, which is still looking lovely, and winner 43024! I take these as far as Temple Meads, before alighting and making my way over to platform 1 for the Severn Beach line! 10 minutes later winner 166205 rolls in to take me to my first new shack of the day, Shirehampton! I wait here 10 minutes before 166205 returns and takes me back to my second shack, Sea Mills! Around 20 minutes later 166212 rolls in to take me to my third shack, St Andrews Road! Luckily the train is late, as I quickly run to the bus stop and pick up First Buses Route 3 formed of ALX400 32288, for the ride back to my fourth shack, Avonmouth! I wouldn’t have been able to make that connection if the train hadn’t of been late, and it saved me two hours! After clearing Avonmouth, I had now officially cleared the interior Severn Beach line, so I jump back onboard 166212 all the way back to Bristol TM!

GWR Turbo 166205, Shirehampton 4.7.17 by DSH Trains, on Flickr

I head over to platform 15 to see if any required power cars are in, and according to my records 43186 is required, but after getting home, I find out it in fact isn’t! But anyway, I took double duds 43186 + 43191 to Bath, before joining dud 43179 and 43078 back to Bristol! Next, I board dud 221137 for the journey out to Bristol Parkway before returning on 150106 to my fifth shack of the day, Parson Street. 5 minutes later 150101 rolls up to take me back to Temple Meads. Next up, I head back over to platform 15 and join double duds 43139 + 43162 back to Bath, before picking up dud 150221 and my final GWR 150, 150234 for the ride back to Bristol TM! My next move is to take 150106 to my sixth shack, Stapleton Road! As we approach Stapleton Road, the horn sounds and the brakes lock up. About a minute later we start moving again, I alight at Stapleton Road and look back down the line to see two men walking up the track! The BTP where fast to respond, but they found no one! I messed up my timings here so spent half an hour here, before 150127 rolled in to take me back to Temple Meads! From here, I had been tipped off that 158958 should roll into Temple Meads at any time, and at 14:54, my final GWR West unit 158958 rolled in to take me on a hop to Filton Abbey Wood, I returned to Temple Meads on 158951.

GWR 158958, Filton Abbey Wood 4.7.17 by DSH Trains, on Flickr

It was now time to clear another shack, Bedminster, I caught 150101 down to Bedminster and then 150106 back to Temple Meads, I quickly get something to eat before joining winner 159107 for the ride to Bath Spa before returning to Temple Meads behind 150261 and 153369. I now had some time before my train home, so I boarded delayed 166205 to Montpelier and then returned to Bristol on 166212, I then took another hop to Bristol Parkway, with double duds 43378 and 43301 doing the honors. A quick platform change was made onto 150221 back to Temple Meads before finally I joined double duds 43017 + 43148 back to Weston!

Nice. It looks strange seeing a photo of a 165 on the Severn Beach run. I read on here somewhere that they were struggling to keep to the timings though. Is that why yours was late?
I've seen a couple of 158s down here recently which is quite nice as I've got a bit of a soft spot for them.
That looked like a good productive day. :)

There have been multiple "teething issues" from door faults to signal failures, and sometimes crew not being too familiar with the trains. I like the 158's as well, it will be awhile before they leave Portsmouth for Exeter mind! As the Turbos apparently won't run the Portsmouth line until 2019!

Sounded like a productive day, has 166205 still got the trial interior?

Yep 205 is still green inside! Was very nicely done!

This post will show a couple of mini trips I had over the past few weeks, most of them not entirely a bash, but a few required power cars and such were picked up!

15/7 Royal International Air Tattoo

So today was my 2nd visit to the Royal International Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford near Swindon. To try and beat the rush, I headed to the station at 06:00 and picked up the 06:24 services, which today would not go to Swindon due to engineering works, luckily the power cars to take me to Bristol where double winners 43146 and 43159! I have 10 minutes at Temple Meads to get something to eat before boarding double duds 43185 and 43087 for the ride to Swindon via Bristol Parkway, arriving into Swindon at 07:40. I make my way to Swindon Bus station to await the shuttle bus and Stagecoach Manchester 10416, the journey took 30 minutes and after 10 minutes going through security I was in the show, I spent from 8:30am till just before 6pm looking around the displays, I will post a few of my favorite photos I took below.
Czech Air Force Aero L-159 ALCAs Explosions , Air Tattoo RIAT Saturday 2017 by DSH Trains, on Flickr
Red Arrows Bottom Half Detonator, Air Tattoo RIAT Saturday 2017 by DSH Trains, on Flickr
Dassault Rafale C French Air Force, Air Tattoo RIAT Saturday 2017 by DSH Trains, on Flickr

I was back at the gate at 18:05 and joined the 20 minute long queue for the bus, This time a Swindon based E400 15737 took me back to Swindon station, because of traffic, I missed the 1907 home by 8 minutes and had to wait an hour for the 20:07 which was formed of double duds 43124 and 43181.

17/7 Bath
Today was a family outing to Bath, which just happened to use the train to get there! I got to the station at 10:30 for the 10:40 train formed of dud 150233 for the ride to Temple Meads before changing onto winner 43140 and dud 43086 for the ride to Bath Spa! I spent a few hours here wandering around before joining the late 17:12 services back to Temple Meads formed of dud 158766, Finally I boarded double duds 43149 and 43165 back home!

19/7 Freight Day at Stafford
Today was one of the few days each year, I like to pick a station with plenty of freight and stay there all day to see what shows up! My first train of the day was 220028 on the first direct XC service of the day from Weston at 08:33, I take this as far as Birmingham New Street before joining winner 350250 for the ride onwards to Stafford! I arrive into Stafford at 11am, and spend until 7pm at the station watching freight go by! In this time 30 freight pass, I board the delayed 19:01 service back to Bristol formed of 220014, once back at Bristol I had missed the earlier train as we ended up 30 minutes late so I boarded 150002 for the stopping run back to Weston in an almost empty carriage!

RIAT looks like it was fun, and in general it sounds like you've had a rather good month! Certainly far busier than my July has been!

Some excellent trips out there DS. Plenty winners too. Congrats on getting your last 150 and 158.

I like to get back to Stafford for a day out too, mind you, if i travelled that far, I doubt I could stay too long, the cats at Moor Street are way too much of a temptation for me to resist.

Excellent days out DH. Air shows are interesting although I don't go to many.
I'm impressed at the thought of seeing 30 freight trains going by in a day.

I have still got a few trips lined up yet! As well as my FOSS 8 in 15 starting on the 31st!

Stafford is a great little station for freight. Freight on the WCML does vary quite a bit per day, but you still have a great chance of getting alot!

2016 was the first RIAT I had been to. I enjoyed it so much we soon booked up for the 2017 and it was as good as the first! 30 is normally a minimum for most weekdays on the WCML! It can vary mind.

22/7 Cheshire Day Ranger

So after a week of rather late starts, it was time for a trip with an early start! I was up at 05:30 and made my way down to the station and waited for the ticket office to open at 6:10am! I board split tickets towards Crewe, splitting at Cheltenham, Wolverhampton and Stafford, and also requested a Cheshire Ranger, it took a minute or two to find, but eventually it was found and I made my way onto platform two and boarded a declassified first-class coach behind double duds 43020 and 43093! I had the usual risky connection next, if the HST was more than 3 minutes late, the chances of catching the 07:00 off Bristol towards the north was risky! But luckily the train arrived into Temple Meads on time! And I was able to run over and catch the 07:00 from Bristol all the way up to Stafford onboard dud 220021! I arrived into Stafford at 9am, and 10 minutes later my first winner of the day, 350250 rolls in to take me to Crewe! The plan here was to wait for the 09:49 Virgin Trains service towards Chester, but as we roll into Crewe, I notice the Crewe ATW 67 set is out, which is unusual for a weekend! After a bit of investigating, I find out that it is to work the 09:41 to Chester! So, I board winner 67022 for the ride to Chester! I make a quick toilet break at Chester before joining Merseyrail…

My first MerseyRail unit of the day was winner 507005, which I take to my first new shack of the day, Hooton, I make a quick pop into the ticket office/ shop and pick up a drink for a quid! I head back onto the platforms and a few minutes later, dud 507031 rolls in to take me to my second new shack of the day, Port Sunlight. Another 8-minute wait is had here before 507006 takes me to my third shack of the day, Hamilton Square. A quick connect here leaves me onboard 508130 all the way to my fourth shack. Bidston. I have a 10-minute wait here, before winner 507014 rolls in to take me to Moorfields! Next up, I take winner 508123 to Kirkdale before returning to Sandhills on 508112, I spend 40 minutes here spotting units for sight before joining winners 508128 and 508143 back to Moorfields. A two-minute wait is had here before winner 507023 and dud 507013 roll in to take me to Liverpool Central. I head upstairs and walk across to Liverpool Lime Street for my next moves...

I was now wanting to head towards Manchester, and I had just missed the TPE service by 5 minutes, the next direct was the 13:51 EMT service, but I noticed there was an earlier train to Liverpool South Parkway, so I boarded winner 319371 for a nonstop run to South Parkway, before joining double winners 158799 and 158813 for the journey to Manchester Oxford Road! I wait 5 minutes here before winner 175106 rolls in to take me to Manchester Piccadilly! After 10 minutes deciding what to do next, I headed over to platform 1 and boarded the 15:14 service bound for Rose Hill Marple, formed of winner 142056, I took this to required shack, Ashburys. 2 minutes later 323238 rolled in to take me to another new shack, Guide Bridge. A 10-minute wait was had here before 142061 rolls in to take me all the way back to Piccadilly arriving at around 4pm. I decided to have another go on a Oxford Road Leap, I jump onboard 185112 just as the doors are closing and make my way to Oxford Road before returning to Piccadilly onboard double winners 150138 and 142047.

I wanted to risk another hop, but at the same time didn’t want to risk missing the 16:35 VT service, so headed over to this and joined 390118 for the fast run back to Stoke-on-Trent. 30 minutes was spent here until, again 220021 rolls in to take me all the way back to Bristol Temple Meads arriving at 20:05! I have a 10-minute wait for the 20:18 non-stop back to Weston formed of 43179 and winner 43174!
