Afternoon everyone

We are going to Blackpool on February 15th 2013,

Does anyone know if the engineering work will be finished then ?

Really don't want the joys of going by bus again to Preston and certainly not to Burnley

Cheers :|

Yep, NRE doesn't show how it will run for Northern yet - almost certainly buses between Blackpool and Preston.

Seeing that its going to be electrified the engineering work will be on and off fir some time

I believe at the moment they are upgrading a couple of bridges in the Blackburn area ready for electrification

That's interesting. When did they announce the electrification of the lines in East Lancashire. Will this also be including the rebuilding of the Colne to Skipton line and the redoubling of the Gannow Junction to Colne line. I do hope so.

Nothing like hoping for such a miracle, but I regretfully feel that the "Second Coming" is more likely to occur in East Lancashire than the reopening of the Colne to Skipton line in the foreseeable future.....

Nope, neither of those things are happening.

Diversions as rail bridge work starts

MOTORISTS and shoppers are preparing themselves for months of disruption as work begins on an integral rail project.

The Tithebarn Street bridge, which links Poulton to Carleton, will be closed from today until May 22 to allow engineers to electrify the line between Blackpool North and Poulton stations.

The Network Rail-led project will focus on re-structuring the bridge, removing the road surface and installing new beams.

This project, to allow the electrical cables to be installed and eventually provide a faster and efficient west coast service, has already raised concerns residents and traders in the two towns will be affected when motorists are prevented crossing the bridge.

A number of diversions will be put in place from today to help traffic flow in and out of Poulton while a pedestrian footbridge has already been constructed..........

How does this affect weekend trains from burnley to Blackpool ?

Thanks for everyone's comments -

Can anyone say when it is safe to book a hotel and not have to use the bus on the Sunday return

Whilst lancastrian's reply is perhaps a little......sharp, it is nonetheless steeped in accuracy. There will be on-and-off engineering works for the best part of this year and most of the upcoming years, making it difficult to know for sure when a Sunday will be "free".

My only advice is to contact both Northern Rail and TransPennine, or your nearest station, for the most up to date information on engineering timetables.

Well possibly late 2016 when all the works are complete. Apart from that, I don't know.

Thank you for your useful information

Sorry if my reply was felt to be a little sharp, it was not intended to be that way. It was just experience from going through similar disruptions when the Electrification from Weaver Junction to Glasgow, came through Wigan & Preston. It was a real pain trying to get from Bolton to Lytham to visit family. In the end I gave up trying to use the train until the works were completed in 1974. So I am quite sure that it will be 2016 until there will be no disruption from the electrification work. But no doubt there will be other reasons (excuses) when things don't work or are disrupted.

Ah no bother, it's the Internet, sometimes a sentence which reads fine in the head comes across as the opposite. Smilies and emoticons help, but I know some people don't like to litter their posts with :) :) :D :P :! and the like.

For this year the official line is at this link: http://www.networkrail.co.uk/North_West_electrification.aspx

Quoting from the pdf:
Will train services be disrupted?
Train services will largely be unaffected during the
duration of the work. However there will be some
weekends when train services will not be in operation
between Preston and Blackpool North, including:

• Saturday 16 Feb to Monday 18 Feb
• Saturday 23 Feb to Monday 25 Feb
• Saturday 2 March to Monday 4 March
• Saturday 9 March to Monday 11 March

This is just for the bridge works, with electrification due to start next year, plus all the other quite major stuff going on; so disruption until 2016 seems a pretty safe bet! I'm sure I read somewhere though that they want to have services running at weekends for the season that starts at Easter.

I'm sure it'll be worth it though....

No worries - no offence taken
