I love watching your excellent videos at home, and they give me an excuse not to do housework, etc.

I was wondering were you able to film the Penistone Line this year for later release?

I notice that on the 10th of August you're premiering a Worksop to Nottingham video. I look forward to this and I assume Mr. Clark is driving.

Really enjoyed the Worksop to Nottingham video, as it's a part of the world I am quite familiar with thanks to the in-laws living nearby and the history is super interesting. The speeds seem quite low in a lot of sections for what is a pretty straight line. Is this mainly due to subsistence issues with all the mining or was it to minimise reconstruction costs?

Track speeds are often a source of curiosity. They should be much higher than they are but there is usually a reason and it sometimes stays with Network Rail. Signalling and infrastructure are usually the culprits but sometimes, there is no apparent reason.

By the way, the Tuebrook to Ashton video will be delayed for good reason. I’m extending it to show the return trip with the empties and and I’m talking to Heidelberg about letting you see the train being unloaded. I think it would be worth waiting. I’ve also got the footage of the “drag engine” - the Class 69 which is despatched to help the loaded Drax biomass train up from the docks. I’ll keep you informed about that. You may have noticed, I’ve set a date of Sunday 22nd Sept for the MIA to Carlisle video on one of our Class 397s. Nice footage and astounding performance over Shap as well as a superb narrative by instructor Steve Hill.

In other news, we will be seeing several routes from Northern’s eastern portfolio including Settle and Carlisle (of course), Carlisle to Newcastle, Leeds to Morecambe and the long awaited Penistone and Bradford lines.

Yes, definitely sounds like a good selection. A Don-Coffey-quality S&C run will be much appreciated, I seem to be missing Leeds to Morecambe, and of course Dickwhistle to Huddersfield is a long felt want.

(Any chance of Rotherham-Chesterfield via the Old Road yet? :) )

(Does anyone else keep seeing "MIA" in the text, reading it as "missing in action" and thinking something's gone wrong?)

I did interpret that as "missing in action" so what does MIA mean?

I think I’ve got that with Freightliner but I’d have to check through.

Weather permitting, I’ll be filming the Penistone line and Bradford via Halifax on the 1st Nov. I’m also going to get Saltburn before we cut the timetable back on that.

That sounds very good to me - I'm gradually working my way through the existing videos and I now have mainly just the particularly long ones left to catch up on. :)

I wonder what the chances of persuading Eurostar to allow the coverage of St Pancras to Paris Nord and Bruxelles, plus the return legs, are...?

I’m delighted to tell you, we’ve got a green light (no pun intended) for the Class 60 video. It’s uploading now and I’ve scheduled it for tomorrow night as a bonfire night treat (if you prefer a night in)!

Also, the Penistone Line filming went ahead on the 1st Nov and is in the bag. I’ll let you know how that’s going. Our mate Vinny has been round and dropped off some footage of the run to Brush with a 70 for repaint.

Don, have you seen that apparently TFL have put a total ban on filming in the cab. Fingers crossed that doesn't cascade down to the rest of the network!

Well, it's worked now. Super stuff! Loads of interest for such a short mileage run. Particularly interesting that we get to see the details of the unloading etc - much better attitude from Heidelberg than from those like the operators of Drax who get all precious about dirty outside people seeing footage of their site, as if it mattered. That excavator driver certainly understands working with the momentum of things all right. Wavertree Technology Park station has a proper clock legible in videos, from which we see that despite being "an hour early" on the return it's still only ten minutes shy of eight hours since he went through there on the way out. And for sure that summit cutting at Scholes is a fabulous piece of work; lovely too to catch a glimpse of the proper old token machine inside the cabinet, still in use to hold just the one token and looking quite shiny and well-kept to me.

The commentary driving is a nice bit of extra interest, although I can only hear maybe 10% of what he says, if that. (Of course he's doing it for himself and not for the microphone, so I wouldn't expect much different.) The apparent progressive relaxation of preciousness over making you censor every word spoken in the cab is another point which is appreciated in comparison to some earlier videos.

Does make it a bit daft to be using diesel haulage when the whole of the main line from start to destination is wired though...

Looking forward to the Richard Anthony line video (I refuse to take that name seriously).

I don't know if you're already aware, but there is a fairly old video from Gascoigne Wood which does go right into the grounds at Drax.
