Sorry, hadn't caught up with the progress at the lower end.

Progress beyond Dippoldiswalde had been non existent for many years but the funding was finally agreed a couple of years ago IIRC. Will be good to ride all the way to Kurort Kipsdorf once more.

I can fully recommend Dresden which has a great Christmas Market (but not as good as Nuremberg which is awesome). We'll more than likely be going there at Christmas ourselves (either by car or by train from Prague). Pirna is a picture-postcard town worth visiting if you have the time for a trip outside Dresden itself.

Literally just back from Dresden - I know it quite well - but it is magnificent (so much to see and do - mind the weather was a lovely 28 deg so which helps)

Bad Schandau outing a great success - the Kirnitzschtalbahn is a joy - however the return was marred by a death on the lines north of BS which shut the route down - but the DB organised buses to Kurort Rathen where the S Bahn restarted ....(bonus being an enjoyable ride through superb scenery) - only an hour late.

Recommend hugely the Dresdner Parkeisenbahn .....in the Grosser Garten - 15" 4km long line with steam on high days and holidays.

Freital to D/wald reminds me of the Vale of Rheidol with attitude - lovely run - the train crew seem to think that only 1 or 2 runs will go on the new section , but they dd point out that if market prices were charged the 14 E ride out be nearer to 50 E.

Finally - a day pass in Dresden on the system is a bargain 5E.

Coming back today - the HBF was closed and all movements stopped for 30 mins at 1140 for a suspect package - reopened and my 1056 to Berlin left well late but had a very spirited run. Shows that the DB has to deal with many of the issues we do over here.

As usual when I ask a question on here, the information is brilliant. Really looking forward to Dresden.

Went to Leipzig last Christmas and liked it so much, we are going back (Prices in markets etc were so much cheaper than in the other major cities).

So, Leipzig, Dresden and Prague it is! With a day or two jaunts out thrown in.

Feel free to contribute anything further on here, but in the meantime THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH!!:D

Prices very reasonable in Dresden - I do recomend the Bautzner Hof pub in Neustadt for a pretty original DDR pub with excellent food.
