Does anyone know if you're a shunter/depot driver and you actually want to move over to a driving position, do you need to sit the driving assessments again?

As far as im aware, you’d have to go through the whole trainee driver process without any prior mainline driving experience. I’d imagine shunting and depot work however would set you up with a great application with you already demonstrating some of the basic competencies of train driving (following rules and procedures, NTS etc). I hope this helps.

As far as I’m aware you don’t need to re-take your psychometric tests. However, you will still start from training school day 1.

That isn’t the case with EMR depot drivers get a full European driving licence and they do full rules.

They used to do a short course like a refresher before mentoring for mainline. But we’ve been told this isn’t the case no more. Maybe something to do with the apprenticeship I don’t know :)

I can speak from experience as I’ve done this move, TOC dependent. At my TOC I didn’t have to retake the psychometric as they were still within the company’s validity of 3 years however I have to go through the full trainee train driver course.

That’s the case for some depots who cross over mainlines for example. GWR has the same (Depot Drivers do a full rules course I believe, whereas Maneuverers don’t).

As far as the assessments go, if you’re a driver grade you shouldn’t need to retake psychometrics.
