Hi all,
Like many, many others I'm hopeful that one day I can secure a trainee driver role. I know most adverts specify you should be within a 40-minute commute to the relevant depot. My question is this: living in Peterborough, and not able to consider relocation, what options does this give me? Is it just Albellio Great Anglia and Thameslink I should be looking out for? Willing to try for freight too. Thanks

If you can't relocate I'm not sure you will have much luck. GTR have just had a massive recruitment campaign but if you look at one off the other threads on here you will see they already have loads and loads of people in the pipeline for trainee courses. On the freight side of things, Freightliner advertised for trainee drivers a while ago and I wouldn't be too hopeful that they will advertise again soon. As far as AGA goes, Cambridge would be your best bet on the West side and there are trainee vacancies that come up on the GE side of things periodically but you would have to probably 'lower yourself' to the level of a depot driver first (sorry but the apathy towards the DD grade on this forum is lamentable at times) and then apply for mainline as there isn't automatic promotion to the mainline any more on AGA. Although I'm unsure if Norwich would be close enough for you.

Lots of GTR drivers live in Peterborough so you wouldn't have an issue applying for GTR Peterborough, Hitchin, Cambridge or kings cross depots-possibly even Blackfriars.

It's also relatively easy to get Ito and out of London for early and Lates so other TOCs in central London may consider you.

2 freight companies are also based at Peterborough depot-GBRF & FL I think although may be wrong which companies they are.

Cambridge also has a depot for GA and XC, although XC won't take on trainees.

Not sure on frieghtliner but GBRF are in Peterborough. However they do only recruit trainee drivers from within their current staff. The way in is to apply for groundstaff positions and work your way up. I have also heard that if many people fail their psycometrics you might not have a long wait.
