Doesn't that depend on the age of the car? A lot of modern cars just need an annual service.

Until stuff starts breaking. If it's newish it probably won't, but then you'll have paid more for it. Bangernomics, to be fair, works best if you can work on cars yourself. Once you have to take it to a garage it becomes less clear cut and rather less convenient. For instance, you can buy a pair of aftermarket brake pads for about 20 quid and if you know how it's a few hours' work so you can do them in an evening or not much of your Saturday, but you'll pay about 150 at a garage for them and fitting.

However the purchase cost would be significant, that's the balance. Keeping a young car is cheaper on maintenance, but expensive if you are replacing every 3 years.

Buy a car for £20,000 and sell for £11,000 after three years and you're looking at spending £3,000/year to save less than £1,000/year. Even at £14,000 and £8,000 that's £2,000/year.

Some observations on RTT that I have found:

For week commencing 18th Cross Country is showing the reduced timetable and EMR is a like Saturday timetable with a half hourly London service. Local services look to be similar to present but slightly more frequent and have longer operating hours:
Derby - Crewe (hourly to 2 hourly)
Newark Castle - Matlock (2 hourly with hourly peak)
Norwich - Liverpool (hourly with some 2 hour gaps)
Nottingham - Worksop (hourly)
Nottingham - Skegness (2 hourly with hourly peak)
Lincoln - Leicester (2 hourly with hourly peak)
Lincoln to Peterborough/Grimsby and Doncaster - Almost normal service but a couple trains are missing

This could all change of course.
