Following on from this discussion about the possibility of shortened Mark 4 sets on the ECML, has the conversion of DVTs to carry passenger accommodation ever been considered? If not why not? And could it technically be possible, even if it would be rather pointless for the 5-10 years they have left in service?

It was given as an option by Porterbrook Leasing as a potential future Mk3 refurbishment/upgrade project.

The answer is likely no, as you point out the short projected lifespan, plus issues around their crashworthiness (AFIK they were built at the time where passengers were banned in travelling in the front carriage of a-train travelling over 100 MPH, possibly influenced by the Polmont rail accident.

AFIK they would have been standard Mk3 coach conversions (the artist concept had a Turbostar like cab on them).

Not passenger accommodation but I believe that when GNER were scoping the Mallard refurbishment back in the 2000s they looked at moving the Kitchen for the Restaurant service into the DVT. This would have seen the Restaurant Buffets rebuilt as Buffet cars, providing more Standard Class seats than was gained by converting them from First Class. I think cost/complexity ruled it out in the end due to the location of the Train Manager's office.

Eversholt offered that that as Mk4 "super-refurbishment" alternative to the IETs. They showed CGI videos of a 1+1 swivel seating in First as well.
