What do i need in this situation? From what i can figure out, TfL ticket free travel for under 11s doesn't apply on Thameslink unless it's between Blackfrairs and West Hampstead, however I can't find any child fares on BR fares.

Not all fares are actually listed on BR Fares, some can also be missing in theory.
Maybe ask your local ticket office about the flat £2 child (if an adult accompanies them) fare since that is the only place that offers those.

Also, if your child is travelling on a 5-10 Zip Oyster, they may be entitled to free travel on that journey nonetheless.
TfL's free travel scheme doesn't just apply to TfL services and NR services where LU tickets are recognised, but also some other NR services (incl. some or all operated by GTR excl. GX) as well.

I think it's only ScotRail that does that. You can buy £2 flat fare tickets online from Thameslink's own website. I think very few others sell them as the ticket type needs extra work to make it sellable.

However it's not available for this flow, at least on brfars.com. After a quick look it seems they aren't in the fares data for flows within Zones 1-6.

Indeed - this is elementary as it’s not applicable to the OP, but where they do exist they can only be purchased online alongside at least one adult ticket. The flat fares are for accompanied children so will only be sold as such. Ticket offices can sell individually where the adult already holds a ticket.

Kids for £2 flat fares are available on most journeys outside of London Zones 1-9 on train services operated by Gatwick Express, Great Northern, Southern and Thameslink*
Full details: https://www.thameslinkrailway.com/tickets/child-tickets, and https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/tick...ed-child-flat-fare-great-northern-thameslink/.

In direct answer to the OP’s question: A paper child anytime day single from East Croydon to Farringdon is £4.25. A return is £7.65.

They could also consider use of Zip cards, Oyster Young Visitor discount.

Which makes sense, given that fares for journeys wholly in Zones 1-6 are usually managed by RDG rather than individual TOCs.

If there are two adults travelling, it's worth considering the child travelling as an adult and going for the Groupsave option.

Is this allowed? I seem to recall a Gatwick Express Groupsave ticket that specifically excluded children, so four adults travelling together was cheaper than two adults and two children.

Slower admittedly but West Croydon to Farringdon could be done for nothing for a child.

I'm not aware of that, and it seems unlikely.

To be fair, it was over 15 years ago when it was operated by National Express. I queried it, and was told Adults only.

A child can travel with an Adult ticket and this is specifically ok for Groupsave purposes.

WHen Gatwick Express was a separate TOC did they accept Groupsave because 'inter-city' TOCs generally didn't.
