I'm looking to travel from London St Pancras to Leicester on 21st April and travel back on 28th to st Pancras.

I notice there are engineering works on the East Midlands line. I’m wondering if I can use my super off peak return via Birmingham new street from Leicester, or is this ticket EMT only?

Many thanks !

The ticket isn't routed EMT-only, and in theory you could use Thameslink to Bedford, but the permitted routes prevent you from using it on lines other than the Midland Main Line.

There will always be replacement bus services in operatijk, but admittedly these are likely to be much slower and more inconvenient than even taking a circuitous route (such as via BHM).

If you are happy to travel in the off-peak period (generally lunchtime to mid-afternoon or late evening is cheapest), you would be best off getting Advance tickets to and from New Street - these are currently available at the lowest tier, £8.00 each way for the faster Virgin Trains West Coast service or £6.00 for the slower West Midlands Trains/London Northwestern Railway service, when travelling at these kinds of times.

And then there's a variety of different tickets you could use to get to Leicester - either a plain off-peak return for £18.70, as Advances only a few pence less than this, or there are a variety of cheaper 'loophole' tickets if you are willing to take the risk that they are incorrectly rejected and you are forced to buy a new ticket and then you have to try new get this back...

If you would be willing to go via Nuneaton, it would be slightly cheaper as the Off-Peak return from there to Leicester is £15.70, though the Advances for the service from London (West Midlands Trains) are still £6.00 each way.

EMT will offer journeys between Kensington Olympia and Narborough via Nuneaton.

If you went outward direct STP to Leicester, you would need a £6 single for Leicester - Narborough on your return journey.

Super Off Peak between Kenny O and Narborough is £64

That's a lot more expensive than going via and splitting at Tamworth or Birmingham, though - whether Advance (which is cheapest) or Off-Peak (valid all weekend in this case) or Super Off-Peak (valid on most trains on the weekend).

When did London Terminals to Leicester stop being valid via Nuneaton?

Surely a trip to Euston, WMT to Nuneaton (or the odd VTWC) then an XC to Leicester?

Surely that’s reasonable?

Reasonable, but not a permitted route according to the latest RG. I'll try and find out when it stopped being permitted...

As far as I can tell, it's not been a permitted route since at least the introduction of the current-style Yellow Pages in 2003. Possibly even earlier - I can't figure out how to work out the maps from the Yellow Pages before then. It's always only been MO and MI, or MM before it was split into those two.

A variety of journey planners (including ones we know and trust) will give me an itinerary for it. So if you wanted to go that way I would suggest printing an itinerary for a journey that way and that way nobody can complain.

All good journey planners will validate it, as it's currently permitted under the shortest route rule.

This is the sort of thing we cover in our fares workshops if anyone wants to learn more :)

St Pancras to Leicester is approx 99 miles Euston - Leicester via Nuneaton is over 115 miles - how is that valid by the shortest route rule?

I was lazily guessing something bus-related ... but it doesn't seem to be that.
