Off on a stag do to Edinburgh at the end of the month , as much as I love a drink couldn't manage 4 days on the p*##.
So looking to spend a few hours every day on the trains for spotting , any recommendations where to travel to allowing me to pass any depots / stabling points and is there any local tickets that allow unlimited travel in this area. ?

Bit more than that. Also valid out as far as Dunblane, the Fife Circle, Tweedbank, North Berwick, all the routes between Edinburgh and Glasgow Central/Queen Street operated by Scotrail and the Glasgow Underground.

be careful of train times in particular last trains at night …

Whilst on a rover end May in Scotland came very close to being stuck in Edinburgh !
