There may be an earlier thread on this.
The other day I checked on RTT on the 156/4 supposedly due to be transferred to Northern and non seemed to be in use on that day. Are they in store?
Do EMR have sufficient 170s now to allow the 156s to be sent North to allow Northern to withdraw its remaining 153s or is the move cancelled.
Thanks
K

The 170s can't be released to EMR until WMR have 196s in use and in turn that delays the release of 156s to Northern.

I know about the 196s and how the 3 cars 170s they displace will be reformed with the centre cars going to XC and driving cars going to EMR, but how many 156s will then transfer to Northern? Are there even any 156s that aren’t 156/4s?

Supposed to be 401-419/422 that are going to northern.
How many 153s are they replacing and are the 155s going with them? Will some more 150/156/158s then be reformed as 3 cars by Northern for routes that require 3 cars and can no longer be strengthened by 153s?

No idea, might explain why the remaining 153s are still hanging around til the 156s transfer.

There are 15 of them transferring to Northern including the 9 that are ex Anglia and renumbered as 156/9’s.

156401, 403/404 and 413-415 are the other units moving to Northern.

Apparently 156902 has reverted to 156402, which suggests that may be transferring first.

I thought the XC centre car shuffle had already been done?

All of the 153s are going, the 155s are staying.
I was asking how many 153s are run by Northern. I don’t see many of them.

But are the carriage numbers still 524xx and 574xx?
They will go back to there old numbers when transferred to northern.
So in answer to my earlier question, there won’t be then. I forget why they were renumbered. Something Greater Anglia specific which was of relevance to EMR but isn’t to Northern?

So are there 15 or 20 156s going to Northern? Apparently there are 15 153s so whichever it is will be a doubling in capacity.

You asked how many were leaving Northern's fleet, which is indeed all of them.

There are ten 153s with Northern at present.

But are the carriage numbers still 524xx and 574xx?

Yes.

The PIS apparatus used in the Greater Anglia units is different to the ex-EMT units.

As myself, Neptune and JonathanH have all said, fifteen.

Do we know which depot they will mainly work from
They might not all transfer to the same depot. It’s interesting how much The various iterations of Northern have attempted to increase capacity in the last roughly 7 years.

Newton Heath would be the most likely location for them as that's where all the other Porterbrook 156s (barring 156440) are allocated. The only other Northern depot with a 156 allocation is Heaton, which (apart from 156440) has an entirely Angel owned allocation of 156s, and doesn't need any more of them. The odds of them ending up at Neville Hill are virtually nil as most (all?) crews in Yorkshire don't sign 156s so would need training on them.

Yes - the carriages couldn’t be renumbered. For example, had 156402 had its carriages renumbered, they would have been 52902 and 57902, and these numbers are already carried by 158902.

They are all going to be allocated to Newton Heath. The majority of drivers at Leeds sign 156’s, me being one of them, for when they visit Neville Hill to use the wheel lathe for tyre turning and previously when they were diagrammed on the Calder Valley. Drivers passed out in the last couple of years don’t sign them yet.

I always get confused about the 15x/9s. The 158/9s were of course built by BREL for WYPTE as 158/9s with carriages in the 529xx and 579xx ranges because a 2nd batch of 155s from Leyland was not possible.

Leeds guards also all sign them.

Interesting, didn't know that, thanks! I had thought that crew knowledge from Leeds would have lapsed after booked work for 156s on the Calder Valley ended, didn't realise they still visited Neville Hill from time to time!

Where is 156440 located?
Heaton. Not sure why it's there, as it's the only Poterbrook 156 at Heaton, the rest are all at Newton Heath. The rest of Heaton's allocation of 156s is owned by Angel Trains.

I believe 156902 is at Wolverton Works, presumably being prepared for use with Northern.
