Not sure if it's been covered here but according to the December issue of Rail Express magazine 171201 is due to transfer from GTR to EMR as 170421 in late 2023
Might have been, might have not - I can’t remember. But yes, 201 is only a temporary sublease to Southern whilst the reform program is completed on its original 171 sets.

Nope, Still quite a few here due to the 196s issues. Should be gaining one at a rate of 1 per week I believe.

It doesn't look like 5M59 ran from Tyseley L.M.D to Etches Park today. Anyone know why? I'd guess its a case of WMT having trouble with the 196s so wanting to keep as many 170s as they can for as long as possible?

I’d have thought that, if the DfT have issued a directive to say that all 170/5s bar 6(?) are going to move without exception to EMR, there is nothing WMT can do about it. Tough that they’re struggling with the 196s; but the issues should have been sorted by now and, as we know, EMR’s Regional operation has been in a dire state for too long.
Overall, EMR have had a good bounce back post-Covid; so that, combined with the chronic Regional situation, would give justification for Regional services to be enhanced. And in any case, EMR has waited years for these 170s through absolutely no fault of its own. Something had to give eventually and it finally did a few weeks ago.
With the races on at Uttoxeter today the Crewe - Newark's have been strengthened to 4 car's on all diagrams. Surprisingly all of them are 170's meaning around half of 2 car 170's are on the route today. Was half expecting the odd 158 and maybe a 156 for good measure.

Makes sense. For packed trains, the dwell times on 156s or 158s can get ridiculously long (as often observed on the Liverpool-Nottingham)

Did another 170 come over from WMT yesterday or have the transfers been stopped for a bit? I'm not seeing a path for one on Realtime Trains.
Probably stopped for a bit with the strikes and Christmas.
