Have these been renumbered from something else? The 10:25 and 11:25 Notts to Worksop journeys are showing as 170923 and 170922 respectively
Yes both were 171's. Presumably made 170/9 to stand them out as they have different couplers. Once this is solved they will be 170422 and 170423 again.Have these been renumbered from something else?
its been reported the mk4s have one going to crewe for work for door control mods so likely not 170sThis looks like an interesting path for tomorrow, heading for Crewe for repaint perhaps? https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:C25714/2022-10-29/detailed
Apparently that's down to transfer in December 2023, but may or may not depending on how next year turns out for both operators.Believe it's 16 3 cars as 170421 (running as 171201) is staying at Southern
Apologies, hadn’t seen this.Yes both were 171's. Presumably made 170/9 to stand them out as they have different couplers. Once this is solved they will be 170422 and 170423 again.
Yes they've just changed the 4 to a 9, there's some pictures of them on FacebookApologies, hadn’t seen this.
I assume they’ve simply replaced the 4?
Thanks Liamf656.The 10:25 and 11:25 Notts to Worksop journeys are showing as 170923 and 170922 respectively
They'll probably figure out the teething issues eventually and service will improve. It can't be good when they haven't moved properly in 3 or 4 months. Thanks Liamf656.
I attempted to catch 170923 at Nottingham, but the incoming working from Worksop (2D11) was cancelled.
I got chatting with some EM train crewe, who said the ex-Southern 170s weren't in good shape - and had been failed earlier this morning.
It’s been a real bad day on the Robin Hood Line today with numerous cancellations and late running. Gaps of up to 3 hours without a train to and from Worksop. The Robin Hood Line is usually very busy on Saturdays often with standing room only on the usually hourly service. Before Covid, when it was 2tph south of Mansfield, many trains even then were overcrowded on Saturdays. The 170’s from Southern obviously haven’t been very reliable today. Thanks Liamf656.

They only transferred in September so they’ve been sat around for only a month but yes even that amount of time in storage isn’t good for themThey'll probably figure out the teething issues eventually and service will improve. It can't be good when they haven't moved properly in 3 or 4 months.
Let's hope the TfW ones are in better shape, especially 170271 as it's going to be sat at Barrow Hill for a while because of the lack of space at Etches Park.
Those 4 have always had issues when they were used by Southern - I believe Southern kept them OOU for around 3 years owing to the conversion to 171s and subsequent refurbishment, after which they had issues arising from the conversion amongst others. This led to the other 5 SR ones (416-420) being handed back to Eversholt and EMR then leasing them. They'll probably figure out the teething issues eventually and service will improve. I’ve noticed a lot more 170 workings on the Liverpool to Norwich route recently, except only working between Liverpool and Nottingham strangely enough. The other routes tend to get them fairly regularly as it is though. In September I travelled with EMR Stockport-Sheffield, Lincoln-Sleaford/Sleaford-Grantham and Lincoln-Doncaster. None were class 170s, even though the hope of riding one was a motive for going to Lincoln. I did see some on Lincoln-Leicester services though.
Then yesterday, a consolation for my Flixbus cancellation (as highlighted in that thread) was locating and riding a 170 Derby-Stoke. I didn't note its number but it had green London Midland interior.
Crewe to Nottingham via derby is a regular. Matlock To Nottingham via Derby also.I’ve noticed a lot more 170 workings on the Liverpool to Norwich route recently, except only working between Liverpool and Nottingham strangely enough. Yes, I even saw a pic on this thread from earlier in this thread of 2 EMR 170s passing eachother at Warrington Central.I’ve noticed a lot more 170 workings on the Liverpool to Norwich route recently, except only working between Liverpool and Nottingham strangely enough. Caught? You took photos? If so, where can we see them?Confirmed 170270 170271 170272.
Caught nice at Coleshill Parkway with a autumnal background right before a autumnal rain storm.

With once again 170270 170271 170272 now departed from South Wales now in pastures now at East Midlands territory. However though not long before they reach Peterborough possible on a Emr service brings back memories from days on those Anglia services into Peterborough.
However braved weather to get these.
The weird thing is EMR never ran any crew trainers or gauge testing runs between Chesterfield and Liverpool as they did with their other regional services - they just randomly shoved 170638 and 418 on it due to lack of available units over the summer and now they seem to have a few diagrams on that route. Very much preferred over the 156s and sometimes 2 car formations!Yes, I even saw a pic on this thread from earlier in this thread of 2 EMR 170s passing eachother at Warrington Central.
As I may be going to Widnes just before Christmas, maybe I'll ride one again then.
They were already accepted as gauged for the route by Network Rail which was the main thing. There was a particularly poor weekend for availability and it was decided to run them by the appropriate people, and they've been used ad hoc since. The drivers and guards require no further training to operate them on other routes - they have similar handling characteristics to a 15x, albeit not exactly the same.271’s now at Barrow Hill, with 270 and 272 now at Etches Park. I wonder if they’ll get the same vinyl treatment as 273 did before they enter service?

170638 was a big treat. More modern and nippy than the usual 158 (and obviously nicer than a 156) and not disgustingly shabby and dated like the ex-ScotRail lot. No random luminous green either like on the /5s.The weird thing is EMR never ran any crew trainers or gauge testing runs between Chesterfield and Liverpool as they did with their other regional services - they just randomly shoved 170638 and 418 on it due to lack of available units over the summer and now they seem to have a few diagrams on that route. Wasnt as long as 3 years but it was a while. There had loads of teething issues when they first came over, i remember having to cancel a rush hour 10 car at London Bridge because a cab door wouldnt close properly! Eventually were as reliable as all the rest after a few months. They did have to be treated differently if an engine failed as coaches didnt cross feed (share electrical power). Those 4 have always had issues when they were used by Southern - I believe Southern kept them OOU for around 3 years owing to the conversion to 171s and subsequent refurbishment, after which they had issues arising from the conversion amongst others. They worked in multiple with the Class 158s back in the Central Trains days. I remember it very clearly growing up!Remember the 170's were the standard stock on Norwich - Liverpool runs for a number of years, the paperwork for gauge clearance will have been done decades ago. Plus there's no crew based in Liverpool or Manchester.

Indeed I do considering it was one of my old locals, but from my understanding EMR seemed to be doing test runs to all new destinations and excluded LIV-NOT, so my presumption was they were not going to end up there for a while yet.Remember the 170's were the standard stock on Norwich - Liverpool runs for a number of years, the paperwork for gauge clearance will have been done decades ago.
