Given (1) the forthcoming Corby electrics, (2) underuse of the line from Manton Junction via the Harringworth viaduct to Corby/Kettering, (3) extensive (current and planned future) housing developments in and around Oakham and Melton Mowbray, (4) frequent road traffic gridlock in Nottingham and (5) journeys from/to Leicestershire/Rutland and Nottingham for work and leisure purposes, why do EMR not start an hourly service from Nottingham to Corby? As well as serving local needs, this would provide an easier route to London for Oakham/Melton residents than the current possibilities via Leicester or Peterborough. Only additional infrastructure needed would be a second platform at Corby (but maybe not needed if trains ran on to Kettering).

Because that route is horrendously slow, and it's much quicker to change at Kettering for Corby rather than a direct service via Harringworth

You missed my point, which is not to get to Corby but rather toget to St Pancras via Corby, or to Nottingham, from Oakham or Melton.

What route will you take from Oakham to Nottingham? Via Syston East and North Junctions? The "classic" route via Old Dalby no longer exists.

Most of it does! Use the Old Dalby test track, then turn East just before the A52, follow the A52 to Gamston, on to Adbolton and put a viaduct across the Trent and the racecourse to join the existing line and enter Nottingham station from the East. Piece of cake - no or very little demolition required!

(No, this is *not* a serious suggestion!)
