This weekend engineering works seem to be taking place between Wakefield Westgate and Sheffield meaning HSTs are skipping Wakefield as a stop

However, all they seem to do instead is go via Barnsley, so what stops them from being able to stop at Kirkgate instead? Are the platforms too short?

The operational platform length at Kirkgate would not permit more than five cars of a HST.

Don't XC HSTs have selective carriage locking similar to the Great Western system though? I believe XC did try it once and serve Kirkgate with a bus to / from Westgate. I guess it wasn't deemed a success.

A few years ago I travelled on an XC service which was diverted that way, northbound, and when it arrived at Kirkgate for the reversal the conductor said he would open the doors for anyone who wished to alight there instead of Westgate.

I almost certain it was an HST, so is the Leeds platform at Kirkgate longer than the Sheffield side?

Id say it's simply just down to timing putting the Kirkgate stop in would add time to the already increased timings between Sheffield and Leeds which would result in maybe losing a path between TPEs Leeds to York then end up behind instead of in front of a VTEC up to Newcastle/Edinburgh
