This story has appeared in the online version of the Epsom local paper ( warning: you'll need your adblockers on - it's a NewsQuest title ) this afternoon:

http://www.epsomguardian.co.uk/news..._face_of_coach_company_approaching_centenary/

Coach drivers and office staff are worried their jobs are at risk after a corporate takeover of an Epsom institution approaching its centenary year.

Epsom Coaches, which was founded in 1920, is to be directly managed by Twickenham-based RATP Dev London from June 25, putting an end to a number of its services.

The company, which had record bookings for this summer, according to managing director Steve Whiteway, who is retiring because of the takeover, will be renamed Quality Line and will no longer run its holiday and tour packages.

A RATP Dev UK spokeperson said: "In order to focus on buses, the core area of our business, we have decided to close Epsom Coaches holiday and day trip business by the end of June 2017.

"Focusing on Quality Line will allow us to better serve passengers, stakeholders and employees and ensure a successful, long term future for Epsom Coaches."

Yes, the well-respected coaching side is being closed down.

Which ironically enough is the original part of the business; Epsom Buses was set up as a subsidiary I think in the late 1980s or early 1990s and until it started using the Quality Line branding about 20 years ago it was in a more or less identical livery to the coaches operation.

Most of the non-TfL contracted buses now are in an all over silver livery.

There is one single decker - from memory I think it is SD42 - which has been turned out in the old London Country livery for the past year or two.

I think that it was 'sold' to Routemaster Buses of Crewe and painted in their fleet colours, but the company was sold before the bus transferred, so it remained green in Epsom.

It seems strange that, with a good order book, that the company wasn't sold as a going concern. Would Nat Ex, with its King's Ferry and Clarkes subsidiaries, be a suitable match?

Doubt it, they're more in to daily commuter, corporate, events transport & private hires. They aren't in to day trips & holidays.

A recent full article on Epsom Coaches in 'Bus and Coach Weekly' failed to mention that they were owned by RATP-Dev!

Quality Line? Good lord. I'm going to put that in the same bracket as "the Democratic Republic of X", and indeed "Quality Hotels", in that if you have to state it.... (draw your own conclusion :) )

Just looking at the online edition of the Richmond and Twickenham Times - there is a pop up advert for Epsom Coaches including links to brochures and bookings for holidays, day trips, coach hire and a picture of an X26 bus. Maybe RATP's advertising department don't keep up with the news!

They're still running through June so |I imagine they'd like some punters.

The Gardiners NMC Facebook page and LOTS are now reporting that Gardiners NMC (of Morpeth) are taking over the tours programme from Epsom Coaches, operating from a 'local base' (i.e. local to Epsom). I hope this venture is successful - the Epsom Coaches tour programme was always well delivered and popular with its customers.

Whilst I am pleased that Gardiners will be continuing the tradition I am surprised by the group to use the quote to focus on our core bus operations as this was a successful, award winning brand. It is also incredible they make no reference to operating another coach company, Selwyns, so if they support one why not both?

If they needed space at their Epsom base then an option could have been with either busses and/or coaches relocated to the Horton Lane area of Epsom where there is a lot more land available or to move either buses or coaches to a second site allowing more space to support their expansion whilst still utilising their current excellent facilities.

My concerns is operating under the RATP London banner will this result in a reduction or withdrawal from their non TfL routes? If so which company will fill the gap and will they insist on a modern fleet or like one operator in East Surrey, which I use, that operates some old and very drafty busses.

I grew up in Epsom and regularly used Epsom Coaches and Epsom Busses both with high standards, modern vehicles and I fear this move will see the standards lowered generally in the area as the benchmark maker they have to compete with withdraws for the market.

Fond memories of several holidays and daytrips with Epsom Coaches, including one holiday in Germany where I managed to leave my coat in the hotel room! When I got back home I phoned the hotel and gave them the details, they found my coat and posted it back to me free of charge, even though I'd said I was willing to pay for postage.

IIRC last time I used the daytrip service was for a trip to Cadbury world.

I have an invite to a "closedown" gathering at their HQ. If anyone wants me to ask anything while I'm there...?

Right....

  • Last day for Epsom Coaches "as itself" will be Sunday 25th June.
  • For any keen photographers, it'll be an Epsom to Salisbury day trip.
  • Redwing are definitely being a bit naughty as they were instructed to repaint those two vehicles before using them.
  • Just because the name and livery haven't been licenced out yet doesn't mean they won't be at some point.
  • The "why" appears to be because the bus routes are a stable, predictable use of resources and a source of income whereas day trips and excursions are very volatile and are much more difficult to plan for*.

*Translation: The bean counters don't want to take the risk of a downturn in that market. Even if that means closing the longest running - 97 years - and most successful such operation in the country.
